TITLE: Education Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Education
FLSA: Non-Exempt, 40 Hours/ week min REPORTS TO: Education Manager
OVERVIEW:
The Wonder Gardens, a nearly 90-year-old historical Zoological Park in the heart of SWFL, seeks an Education Coordinator. This vital frontline position will serve as an integral member of Team Wonder. The Educator will create, market, and provide environmental education programming to students, teachers, and the general public, both onsite and offsite that reflects the mission of the Wonder Gardens.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of fun and experiential educational programs and programs for school children and visitors of all ages
Works closely with Education Manager to achieve revenue goals for programs and grants
Create reports for the department on programs, numbers, revenue, expenses, as needed
Facilitate animal feeding and encounter experiences with lorikeets, and other Wonder Garden resident animals
Deliver natural science field trips and school programs for elementary and middle school children
Assist in the supervision of interns and volunteers
Deliver teacher training programs
Assist with Wonder Gardens special events
Assist with partnership projects with schools and youth groups in the community
Co-develop programs as assigned
Serve as coordinator and counselor for Wonder Gardens Camp Programs
Assist with the care and maintenance of animals, equipment, and materials used in programming
Work effectively as a member of a team and provide support to other team members
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Enthusiastic desire to work with children and adults of all ages and abilities
Exhibits well-developed emotional intelligence and empathy
Strong organizational and leadership abilities
Strong communications, public speaking, and teaching skills
Must have experience managing tractable animals, including reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, and invertebrates
Strong commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, environmental quality, and natural resources
Ability to conceptualize, design, and implement programs, projects, and activities
Needs to be able to think logically and solve problems with little or no guidance
Knowledge and use of science lab equipment
Artistic ability to create props and other program materials is highly desirable
Knowledge or willingness to learn about local ecosystems and the natural history of southwest Florida
Ability to work effectively as a team member
Computer skills (Microsoft Office working knowledge a plus)
Willingness to work outside usual 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. hours to conduct programs in the evenings, weekends, or holidays in sometimes hot, humid, and buggy conditions
Ability to stand for long periods
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor level college degree in education, ecology, science, or related field required
Minimum of two years of experience at an education institution preferred
Minimum of two years working with early childhood and elementary populations preferred
Minimum of two years as an interpreter, naturalist, or equivalent preferred
Minimum of two years of experience in building educational programming based on state standards, non-profit mission, dialogic & experiential learning preferred
Minimum of two years of experience working with animals in educational programming preferred
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups and abilities, including adults in small as well as large group activities
Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and Life Saving, or ability to obtain
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
