About us

Pacific Historic Parks, a nonprofit supporting historical sites in the Pacific, is currently seeking an Education Specialist. Working in collaboration with the Interpretive and Program Specialists the Education Specialist will further PHP’s mission to honor, remember, and understand historic events, individuals and locations within the Pacific.

The Education Specialist will be responsible for the creation, implementation and evaluation of curriculum-grounded programs and initiatives for teachers and students; in alignment with the Common Core - Humanities and Social Studies curricula for K-12 classrooms. The Education Specialist will engage with educators and school administrators locally, regionally, and nationwide. This position also works with members of various departments and organizations in strategizing and establishing partnerships with appropriate local, state, and national educational entities and foundations in support of PHP’s educational mission.

Job Purpose

The Education Specialist will create, implement, and support educational programs to include curriculum development and lesson plans tailored to support activities and events at Pearl Harbor National Monument, Honouliuli Internment Camp and Diamond Head State Monument.

What We Need You To Do!

  • Demonstrated success in creating and implementing interdisciplinary place-based curriculum that aligns with Hawaii State DOE standards K-12 within relevant timelines.
  • Demonstrated success in the development, on-time delivery, and evaluation of educational curricula for both teachers and students.
  • Develops and delivers onsite humanities-based field trips for students in grades K-12.
  • Develops and executes other student programs as assigned.
  • Utilize unique teaching methods to ensure successful implementation of programs.
  • Collaborate with Interpretation and Program Specialists in educational programs.
  • Implement and contribute to the development of youth programs that align with Hawaii State DOE standards K-12. Youth programs may occur on weekends, Fall, Spring, and Summer Breaks
  • Assist in the scheduling of education programs and other required administrative duties
  • Lead and contribute to pre-site, on-site and post-site visits both in-person and virtually
  • Abide by procedures and policies for safe and effective implementation of education programs
  • Promote educational programs offered at the park and network with other educators and organizations
  • Attend regularly scheduled Education Department meetings
  • Occasionally assist with inventory and other special events that may be held outside of traditional worksites and work location

What we Need You to Know How To Do!

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred) in history, museum education, education or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 year’s experience with secondary school students and teachers in a museum, school, or other educational setting.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and in preparation of reports, curriculum and other materials.
  • Familiarity with US History with an emphasis on the Second World War a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and experience coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional research skills and knowledge of historical best practices.
  • An understanding of youth development and the role of social emotional learning
  • Willingness to work overtime during special events or heavy visitation periods or to meet deadlines.
  • Proven capacity to work on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience public speaking and conducting guided tours
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace, Zoom, etc.
  • Ability to work within deadlines in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. weekends and/or afterschool hours)
  • Multicultural competence and bilingual ability a plus (Japanese, Korean, Chinese)

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s in History, Education, or related field
  • Bi-lingual ability a plus
  • Basic experience with video editing and/or graphic design
  • In-depth knowledge of World War II history
  • Experience with curriculum development

Working Conditions

  • Education programs will take place at park sites, schools, and other venues in prevailing weather. Applicants must be comfortable with working outdoors within the Hawaiian elements for extended periods of time.
  • Supporting duties will take place in an office environment with standard office equipment, artificial lights, and air conditioning.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working with computers, phones, and other office equipment. Standing for prolonged periods for select projects and special events.
  • Walking and hiking on uneven terrain with possible exposure to outdoor elements.
  • Ability to squat, kneel, and reach for objects.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds
