JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF JOB: Diagnostician

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid/current New Mexico teaching license with appropriate endorsement Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: Special Education Director

JOB GOAL: Diagnostician: To provide the testing and documentation required to determine eligibility for Special Education Programs and to facilitate the implementation and delivery of special education services and the documentation of those services at all school sites to be in compliance with state and federal guidelines and District policies. Coordinate evaluation and IEP development of eligible children transitioning for early intervention services and student’s of school age.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate and assess referred students (preschool through high school ages) to determine eligibility for Special Education Services in accordance with the rules and regulations established through the New Mexico Team Manual and State regulations.
  • Maintain a digital yearly log of initial evaluations and re-evaluations, including due dates and evaluation dates, to be updated periodically and shared with the Special Education Director.
  • Maintain a calendar and daily log of activities and scheduled meetings.
  • Communicate through phone and/or email on a regular basis with staff as needed to meet all timelines required by the district and NM Special Education Department.
  • Select and administer various types of assessment procedures including formal and informal, standardized and non-standardized tests, norm referenced, and criterion referenced tests.
  • Choose evaluation instruments and procedures appropriate for each exceptionality, age level, and/or culture, linguistic factors.
  • In keeping with the NM Team Manual guidance, prepare reports that include data from multiple sources, including standardized and non-standardized tests, short-cycle assessments, state testing, attendance, teacher input, parent input, etc. as appropriate.
  • Prepare copies of evaluations and ensure that parents have received a copy at least 2 days before the EDT (Eligibility Determination) Meeting.
  • Be able to define the various exceptionalities per the NM Team Manual and list characteristics and needs as differentiated from cultural and/or linguistic differences.
  • Prep and then facilitate the completion of the Eligibility Determination Team (EDT) forms from the NM Team manual for all exceptionalities with the EDT/IEP team, including facilitating discussion why the data supports that the student is or is not eligible for special education services.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the identification and eligibility for Dyslexia in New Mexico, including following state guidelines for the administration of specific tests.
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete the NM Team Identification Worksheet for Dyslexia and to share the data, including the concepts of standard error of measurement, confidence intervals, standard score ranges, etc.
  • Be present and participate as a member of the IEP meeting.
  • Coordinate with other ancillary personnel regarding testing and IEP data.
  • Incorporate assessment data and present levels of performance into the IEP format. Assist with recommended goals and objectives as a member of the EDT and IEP team.
  • Maintain a monthly log of evaluations and duties completed, to be shared with the Special

Education Director. • Communicate with parents and staff using professional skills to discuss issues and problems faced by parents of exceptional children, describe community resources available to parents, describe models for service delivery, communicate state and federal regulations and due process rights to parents and professionals, communicate assessment and evaluation results both verbally and in writing, while demonstrating sensitivity of cultural, social, and ethnic values and attitudes.

  • Maintain confidentiality of special education students, families, and records.
  • Collaborate with school sites administration and staff regarding IEP meetings.
  • Share professional knowledge with special education staff.
  • Respond to various physical and sensory needs of children with various exceptionalities.
  • Describe rationale necessary to determine a child’s least restrictive environment and discuss the historical development of the least restrictive environment.
  • Be aware of new test revisions in order to ensure that the district is using the most reliable and valid instruments that reflect new research trends, new diagnostic criteria and changes in US demographics.
  • Be aware of inventory levels with tests so that tests can be re-ordered as needed.
