Job Summary:

Chloeta is seeking two Emergency Medicine Physicians to provide direct patient care in Chinle, AZ. This position offers short-term (16 weeks) options with one-to-three-year options to extend.

The facility is a 60-bed hospital, which provides medical, surgical, pediatric and obstetric care. The Emergency Department and the Urgent Care Department care for approximately 30,000 patients per year. The Emergency Department consists of nine (9) beds and emergency care services are provided on a 24-hour basis for adults, adolescent children, and infants. The Urgent Care consists of six (6) beds and is staffed by mid-level providers (Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners) who see patients that present for acute care and who have been triaged as lower acuity. The Urgent Care is an extension of the Emergency Department; utilizing the same central triage and staff, and subject to the same EMTALA regulations. The Urgent Care operates form 8 am – 8 pm. The Emergency Department also provides care for patients with less acute illnesses who present to the department after 8 pm. The Emergency Department is also staffed with an advanced care practitioner (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) from 12 pm – 12 am.

The service unit is located on the Colorado Plateau with excellent opportunities for photography, hiking, running, road biking, cross country skiing, and mountain biking. Canyon de Chelly National Monument is within 5 miles of the hospital and is a wonderful place for exploring and sightseeing, running and mountain biking.


Job Classification: Full-Time Contract

Supervisory Responsibilities: None but may serve as mentor.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide emergency care on a regular and ongoing basis to patients seen in the emergency room. This includes stabilization and transfer of major trauma (penetrating wounds, hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, significant blunt trauma etc.).
  • Provide on-call services after their regularly scheduled shift during the week and as scheduled on weekends in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Competent in the management, stabilization and transfer of pediatric trauma, pediatric advanced life support, adult cardiac life support, psychiatric emergencies such as suicide, and complex/critical medical conditions (septic shock, cardiopulmonary shock, end stage renal disease etc.).
  • Make rounds in the inpatient wards to ensure that patients are receiving proper medical care.
  • Assume responsibility for the diagnosis, prevention therapy, maintenance, and rehabilitation of patients by performing interviews and examines each patient, review past medical history and requests.
  • Perform complex diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case.
  • Serve as a first responder for “codes,” that is, ACLS/PALS administration for patients found in life threatening situations for which the “code blue” activation system has been initiated on the CCHCS campus, including the outpatient departments.
  • Make note of observations to be incorporated into clinical/EHR records.
  • Give total patient care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up services to patient under their care.
  • Provide telemedicine services for patients with mild respiratory illness in the Respiratory Clinic
  • Provide telephone visits for patients in need of chronic care management for whom it would be high risk to travel to the hospital for care.
  • Provide remote clinical support including but not limited to working with all outpatient telehealth clinics including consenting patients for drug therapies, evaluating, and treating patients in telephone clinic, and communicate results of orders to patients in a timely manner.
  • Care for critically ill patients in the Emergency Room (ER), Special Care Unit (SCU), and inpatient wards. Coordinate care with specialists both within and outside of the facility.
  • Review the patient's medications, diet, therapy course, adherence to management plan and patient observations. Modify regimen as required.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics making observations appropriate to the outpatient's underlying disease and treatment plan, including current symptoms.
  • Tour of Duty: Regular Shift: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm or 8:00 pm to 8:00 am, Sunday through Saturday including Holidays, Twelve (12) hours per shift. Swing Shift for COVID-19 Pandemic: 12:00 pm to 12:00 am or 12:00 am to 12:00 pm, Sunday through Saturday including Holidays, Twelve (12) Hours per shift. Overtime: Additional hours are admissible to a contractor that works more than 12 hours providing direct patient care. A contractor shall be subject to working longer hours in the rare instance patient load demands the contractor remain past their scheduled 12 hours in the Emergency Room.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Required: Possess a minimum of thirty-six (36) months of of Emergency Medicine Residency Training with a minimum of six (6) months experience in the specialty. There must be no lapse of services of no more than 6 months prior to beginning tour of duty.
  • Required: Shall be board certified with the American Board of Emergency Medicine or with the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. Only contractors just graduating from Emergency Medicine Residency Training may be boardeligible. If the contractor is to perform out the normal training parameters of his/her specialty, then the contractor shall provide certification of hospital privileges in those additional scope of practice(s).
  • Required: Possess a current, valid, unrestricted medical license in any state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States, throughout the term of this contract. License verification must be provided at the time of application.
  • Required: Must possess a current, unrestricted DEA license. License verification must be provided at the time of application.
  • Required: Maintain valid and current certification and provide proof at the time of application in the following:
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • And any other applicable certifications based on this specialty as determined by the facility.
  • Required: Possess and maintain a current driver's license in any state.
  • Required: Must provide at minimum three current letters of reference from other health care providers familiar with the contractor's clinical practice skills. One letter must be from the Chief of Staff/Medical Director or Immediate Supervisor at the hospital in which the contractor either holds or last held staff privileges. If the contractor has just completed a residency program, one of the letters shall be from the program director or service chief.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to withstand physical and emotional stress.
  • Must be able to stand and move for long periods of time.
  • Able to frequently lift at least 50 lbs., reach, pull, push, bend, stoop, and kneel.
  • At the time of hire, must provide a fitness for duty certificate issued by a licensed physician to perform the proposed job without significant risk to personal health or the health and safety of others.
  • At the time of hire, must provide documentation of evidence of immunizations as required by the facility's immunization policy.

Drug and Alcohol Testing:

To enforce Chloeta’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, an employee or candidate could be subject to undergoing a drug screen and/or alcohol testing at the beginning of employment, as well as after commencement of employment where there is reasonable suspicion of intoxication, or following an automobile or other accident, or as part of a company or facility-wide random drug screen process.

Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
