Who we are: Epicodus is a school whose mission is to make tech an accessible career, especially for people from under-represented groups (like people of color, trans people, and women). We train our students in high-demand coding skills, and then help them find employment. Our mission is to help people get better jobs, and many of our students were formerly unemployed or working for low wages. We also work hard to do our part in making the tech industry a more diverse and equitable space - among other things, our staff takes turns participating in a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) working group, and we consider DEI a core part of the work we do.

What it's like working here: We have seventeen employees, most of which are in Portland, who work some combination of at home and in the office. We’re very committed to fostering an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all of our staff and students. Work-life balance is a big deal: we work 35 hour weeks and take about 30 days paid time off yearly.

Collaboration is also a big deal, and so we work mostly in the same place (Discord when online, downtown when in-person) and at the same time. This is a hybrid role, so whoever we hire should plan to be in the office a minimum of one day per week. That said, we're also flexible, and shifting around hours here and there is common. Because this role will not be working with any specific class, the hours are particularly flexible. Our advising team generally works hours that align with our full-time or part-time classes, so you’d be welcome to arrange a schedule that allows you to work effectively with both sides of our team.

Our office has great light, bike parking, is easily transit-accessible, and is generally a nice place to be. We work on 27" iMacs and adjustable sit-stand desks. With the meaningful work we do, the strong support we give each other, the healthy work-life balance, and the great physical space, many of our staff say this is one of the best jobs they've had.

Why we're hiring: Epicodus is looking for someone to help us connect our graduates with employers. A major reason for our students' success in finding employment after graduating is that we have staff who work to tell employers about what we do, and let them know about our internship program, and how to hire our students. We would like to bring someone on board who can be entirely dedicated to this role.

About the job: Your job will consist of finding companies who are interested in hiring Epicodus graduates, talking to them about Epicodus, and plugging them into our employment programs (internships, internal job board, and direct hiring). To find companies, you'll make phone calls, send emails, network on LinkedIn, and go to events. It will be fairly similar to a typical business development role.

Pay and Benefits: This position starts at $45,000 per year. Every year, each of our employees receives a $2,500 raise, until they reach $65,500. Both our starting salary and salary cap are evaluated on a yearly basis, sometimes resulting in an additional cost of living raise. At the end of each cohort (approximately every ten weeks), full-time employees receive a $1,000 bonus. We provide a number of benefits including:

  • Health, vision, and dental insurance
  • A 401(k)
  • An FSA that can be utilized for healthcare expenses
  • A commuter benefit covered by the company (with the option to contribute additional pre-tax funds) that can be used for public transportation and parking near the office. You also have the option to contribute additional pre-tax funds
  • A yearly education stipend
  • Career services support comparable to what we offer our graduates for employees who decide to move on from Epicodus

Qualifications: No previous experience is required, but applicants with experience in sales or related work will likely have naturally developed the qualities we’re looking for. These are:

  • Communication skills: This job involves emails, speaking on the phone, and sometimes meeting in person, so it’s really important to be able to make yourself understood and to understand others in all of these contexts.
  • Resilience: Your job will involve a lot of follow-up with potential partnering companies. You need to feel comfortable emailing a company a couple times who didn't respond to your first email. This role bears some similarities to sales, so you’ll also need to be comfortable hearing no pretty frequently and continuing to persist in your goals despite that.
  • Initiative: This role has a strong support from our other staff and the processes we have, and it also has a lot of freedom for you to try new things and find better ways. You'll be most successful (and happy!) if you can come up with great ideas and see them through to completion.
  • People skills: In this job, you’ll need to be able to establish a rapport and maintain relationships with folks across the tech industry.

The application: Send a message explaining why you'd be good at this job and how you would help create an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to all. One important thing you do in this position is email companies to tell them why they should consider hiring Epicodus graduates; so similarly, send us a message about why we should consider hiring you. Try not to "oversell" yourself - let your message tell your story of how you'd be a good fit for the position by giving examples of your experiences (personal and professional) that have prepared you for this job.

The evaluation: We make an active effort to take bias out of the hiring process and to be objective as possible. When evaluating job applications we follow the methodology laid out by psychologist Daniel Kahneman (http://www.businessinsider.com/daniel-kahneman-on-hiring-decisions-2013-1).

When we review your message, we'll be looking for these things:

  • A strong opening that gives a quick reason why you're a good fit for the position.
  • Examples from past work or other experience that show why you'll be good at this job.
  • Brevity (can you write an email that is concise enough for a busy employer to read through?).
  • Proper spelling and grammar.

Don't include a resume in your message, but do include a link to your LinkedIn profile. (If you can't have a LinkedIn profile, explain why and send a resume.) We'll be looking for the following in your profile:

  • A friendly URL (for example, linkedin.com/in/michaelkaisernyman).
  • An "About" section that summarizes your experience and what skills you bring.
  • Succinct and specific descriptions of your previous jobs, with concrete numbers and examples.
  • Including only the most recent 3-4 jobs, unless previous ones are relevant to this position.

Candidates who have a strong message and LinkedIn profile will be given a phone interview to evaluate your phone skills, and then a video interview to evaluate your face-to-face communication skills.

We're looking forward to hearing from you!
