The Engineer will be responsible for developing knowledge for one or more distribution-system equipment product lines (e.g., capacitor banks, reclosers, switches, etc.), under the mentorship of their direct supervisor and/or experienced apparatus engineers. This includes day-to-day support of product line issues, ongoing equipment development activities, and building technical expertise to support creation of Asset Class Strategies in collaboration with other engineers within Asset Strategy and Planning’s (ASP) Asset Management Program organization.

This position will report directly to the Engineering Manager of the Switching/Reactive Apparatus Asset Engineering unit - under the Asset Management Program (AMP) organization of Asset Strategy and Planning (ASP).

The Engineer will develop skills in their assigned apparatus, and will provide support in many key activities, including (but not limited to):

  • Support development and implementation of new products, features, functions or applications to support grid resiliency, reliability, public and worker safety

  • Training development and support for field, operations, engineering, and other varied audiences

  • Support development of comprehensive Asset Class Strategies to maximize the value of our assets and achieve optimal performance

  • Advancing grid innovation and resiliency

  • Develop standards for construction, operation, and maintenance of equipment

  • Develop equipment specifications, review vendor test reports and drawings, and evaluate equipment to select robust and cost-effective solutions

  • Collaborate with vendors to review equipment, identify and remediate issues, visit manufacturing facilities for site qualification and testing, and monitor technology developments

  • Participate in industry committees as necessary to represent SCE’s interests in product development and standards implementation

  • Build relationships with and provide technical support for field personnel; support field personnel training as needed

  • Provide support for development of Asset Class Strategy for assigned equipment

  • Collaborate with Asset Class Strategy team to conduct lifecycle cost and risk/benefit analysis

  • Develop expertise to asset health assessment

  • Provide technical engineering support to a range of equipment implementations of distribution and communications technologies

  • Identify and resolve issues related to projects, and present findings and status to management

Qualifications


The essentials

  • Must have graduated or graduate by June 2023 with a Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field

  • 0-3 years of engineering experience

  • Valid CA Driver’s License

The preferred

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to present information to diverse audiences

  • Demonstrate effective resource planning and an ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation

  • Experience with distribution system design and operation

  • Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in

  • Experience with T&D (Transmission & Distribution) apparatus such as capacitor banks, switches, reclosers, relays, transformer banks, etc. Engineering experience in transmission & distribution, distribution/substation automation and communications technologies, distribution/substation apparatus and automation controllers, field performing analysis, consulting, and providing technical recommendations

  • Some previous experience with developing asset roadmap and/or implementation strategies

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
