We are seeking a dynamic individual experienced in traffic signal optimization and systems engineering. In this role you will:
  • Support and maintain traffic signal system, software applications and IT networks: Administer and maintain the reliability of the central operating system (KITS) for signal timing optimization. Provide technical support to signal system users and maintain critical system availability Develop back-up plans for emergency conditions.
  • Support the implementation of new technology for signal system and advanced signal control strategies. Manage and oversee projects and system support contracts pertaining to signal operations.
  • Provide network and system operational support to staff during incidents, weather events, and other emergency operations.
  • Support the development of policies and procedures that demonstrate proactive management of the arterial transportation network. Assist in the performance of in-house assessments and the development of alternatives for managing and coordinating traffic signal system operations, non-routine lane closures, special events, and emergency evacuation strategies.
  • Develop and optimize signal timing plans using signal optimization and simulation software to alleviate traffic congestion, improve traffic flow, and accommodate traffic pattern changes. Assist in review of signal timing and design plans.
  • Support and coordinate between field signal operations and office signal operations by installing traffic signal controllers in the field with advanced traffic control and communications capabilities.
Assist the Traffic Operation Center with coordinating incident detour plans.
  • Respond to concerns related to signal operations such as signal timing, Synchro files, and traffic signal data. Observe and analyze signal operational related issues and provide and implement solutions.

Candidate will also assist with project management oversight for Traffic Engineering related projects. This entails implementing VDOT’s project management procedures, utilization of VDOT’s project management software and processes, and developing project management strategies.
Also will assist in the implementation and oversight of the Statewide Communication Plan to bring high speed communication to all traffic signal cabinets. The selected candidate will develop a working knowledge of communication systems such as Fiber Optic Cable, Ethernet, Broadband, and Wireless communication equipment and devices. Provide prompt, effective, technically correct and courteous technical assistance to VDOT personnel and our external customers including designers, consultants, contractors and vendors.

Minimum Qualifications

You may be minimally qualified if you have:

PE, Professional Engineer Licensure
Experience with project management and developing project management strategies
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Transportation, Electrical, Systems) or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Experience with traffic signal system operations and timing optimization.
Transportation management related computer programming experience applicable to signalization.
Ability to analyze and interpret data metrics and calculate overall performance.
Experience applying engineering principles and practices.
Ability to effectively communicate technical information

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:

Knowledge of KITS (signal system) as well as Insync, Next Generations Signal Controllers; or related systems.
Knowledge of fiber, wireless, and leased communication systems
Knowledge of Signal System software such as Fourth Dimension (D4) Traffic Signal Controllers or related systems.
Experience using signal control software
