The BRICK Buffalo Academy Charter School is scheduled to open in August of 2023 to students in kindergarten and first grade. As a result, BRICK Buffalo is recruiting founding team members who are committed to proving what is possible for students and families on the East Side of Buffalo. Overview
The Coordinator of English as a New Language (ENL) ensures that teachers are implementing high-quality instruction that is accessible for all English language learners, that all ELL students are receiving supports to meet their needs, and that we operate in full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing the support of English language learners. This is an ideal position for someone who has a passion for serving ELL students and wants to have the opportunity to design an innovative school program to best serve the ELL students of BRICK Buffalo Academy.
Essential Functions
- Ensures the academic and social emotional progress of all English language learners to ensure they achieve their individual goals
- Ensures that the school is able to achieve its overall goals for its ELL students, including the metrics for student persistence and student growth established by the SUNY Charter Schools Institute
- Advocates for ELL students, their families, and the staff who serve them
- Supports the development of a comprehensive ELL program to serve the unique needs of the school’s ELL students and their families
- Provides direct services to students, including through co-teaching classes and providing additional support classes to students that are tailored to their individual needs
- Partners with the school-based operations team to secure required translation services, including by ensuring that required family communications are translated and that translators are present for parent teacher conferences as required
- Establish individual learning plans for all ELL students that include their unique goals and an explanation of how the school will work to meet their individual needsProvides professional development for instructional staff to target instruction based on specific areas of need, including through the use of accommodations and modifications for English language learnersProvides professional development for staff to ensure the success of the ELL program, including sessions on compliance and co-teaching
- Recommends strategies to enhance ELL performance on standardized tests
- Participates in the school’s Student Support Team meetings to ensure effective implementation of the school’s I&RS process for English language learners
- Designs and implements an internal compliance audit process to ensure that the school remains in compliance with all local, state and federal guidelines for compliance
- Attends IEP meetings when necessary, including meetings with the BPS Committee on Special Education for ELL students
- Promotes strong relationships with students who are learning English as a new language and their families, monitors ongoing communication to thee families, and provides guidance in complex cases
- Maintains knowledge of federal, state and local ELL regulations and engages in ongoing professional learning to understand any shifts in these expectations
- Provides quarterly reports to the Principal and Superintendent that describe the academic achievement of ELL students, strengths in the implementation of the ELL program, and suggested areas for growth
- Participates as an active member of the school’s instructional staff, including by attending staff meetings, parent teacher conferences, and professional development sessions, as well as by fulfilling other duties like monitoring breakfast, morning arrival and dismissal.
Qualifications

- A commitment to servant leadership and the belief that their success is directly connected to the success of their students and staff
- A Masters Degree
- New York state certification as a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
- At least 2 prior years of experience teaching ENL students
- A strong understanding of collaborative teaching and how to differentiate and scaffold instruction at the elementary level
- Outstanding critical thinking skills
- A commitment to high performance standards and unwavering belief that all students can excel
- An ability to meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed and “Highly Qualified” according to ESSA
- Current authorization to work in the United States – A candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment
- A commitment to doing whatever it takes to ensure the success of their founding school
Salary, Goals and Employment Period
- Salary Range: Competitive compensation package, Based upon previous experience
- Employment Period: Eleven/Twelve Months
