Duties and ResponsibilitiesExcel teachers are responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous college-preparatory instruction designed to foster the success of their students. Teachers who thrive at Excel tend to be entrepreneurial instructors and hungry learners who crave frequent, high-quality feedback on their practice. They also have a great deal of passion and expertise in their content area that they are eager to share with students. The ELL Specialist provides direct instruction to students in need of a substantially separate English as a Second Language (ESL) course. A member of the Learning Support Department, this individual reports directly to the Dean of Student Supports and is responsible for the following activities:Teacher SupportCollaborate with teachers to help students master content and language objectives.Advise teachers on accommodating curriculum for ELL students.Collaborate with teachers to modify curriculum when necessary.Support teachers in guiding ELL students toward the Network Priority Goals.Student SupportTeach a substantially separate ELD class based on caseload, or provide inclusion support for classes containing ELL students.Work specifically with ELL students during assigned periods of the day.Programmatic supportManage the ELL program including, but not limited to: completion of necessary paperwork, training of teachers, management of parent and student communications, execution of student testing/screening, and upholding of general Department of Education compliance requests.General ResponsibilitiesAlign student support services with the schools mission and educational philosophy.Participate in generating and upholding Excel staff norms.Serve as a homeroom teacher and academic advisor.Serve as a productive member of the Excel community. QualificationsA Bachelors degree is required; a Masters degree preferred;A minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required;An unwavering commitment to and belief in the mission of Excel Academy Charter Schools, including Excels values and educational model;A commitment to addressing inequity in education;The ability to focus and thrive in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment;The ability to work effectively in a team environment and the willingness and desire to support others in doing their best work;An entrepreneurial spirit that reflects an openness to change, a willingness to problem-solve, and an interest in developing new ideas & programs; andCan speak to their personal investment and commitment to antiracist education and diversity, equity, and inclusion in our school community and beyond. Preference will be given to applicants who also:Have a track record of leading and/or engaging in anti-racist work;Have a track record that reflects the importance of rigorous classroom instruction and culture; Have experience in a public or charter school setting and have experience working with schools that serve grades K-12;Have experience teaching or leading schools that serve family populations that are similar to those at Excel Academy; andSpeak Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic fluently.
