Job Duties

VDOT’s Salem District Equipment Section is seeking a candidate to manage the Salem Equipment Shop. This position is responsible for directing the maintenance and repair of equipment used for highway maintenance and construction, and emergency operations. Position is also responsible for scheduling, directing, evaluating, and overseeing the work of equipment repair technicians performing diagnosis, service, repair, inspection, and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment. Prioritizes Equipment shop workload based on customer requirements, parts availability, and manpower. Outsources work when required to meet needs. This position is essential during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of general shop practices and the maintenance, inspection, and repair of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy trucks, and maintenance/construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental and safety regulations related to fleet management and shop practices.
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in: the use of fleet management systems, creating/managing workorders, and researching equipment data and repair history.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and train others.
  • Ability to plan/schedule work and establish obtainable priorities.
•Knowledge of procurement and contract monitoring relating to equipment vendor sources. •Demonstrated knowledge inorganizing work under a budget and developing cost estimates. •Ability to operate various types of equipment.
  • Ability to research and evaluate data and prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with customers and management.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools, and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to obtain State Motor Vehicle Inspector license within 11 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
  • Approved safety shoes required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vocational or technical training in automotive and equipment repair and diagnostics.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining automotive and/or construction equipment.
  • Experience supervising equipment service and repair operations and staff.
  • Master Medium/Heavy Truck and/or Master Automobile ASE certified.
  • CDL.
  • Current State Motor Vehicle Inspection license.

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to,
inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are
required to report.
