General Statement of Duties


Provides assistance to school teams to assess and identify AT (Assistive Technology) needs for students with IEPs and 504 Plans including AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication).


Essential Duties


  • Plans and coordinates AT evaluations and plans for students in grades pre-K through 12 to ensure they have access to all aspects of the school environment. Requires travel to various school locations.

  • Provides division-wide, school-based, and individual training for teachers, SLPs, administration, and others.

  • Works with IEP teams to determine students’ needs, to conduct data-based trials of AT and to communicate with and contribute effectively with multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Assists the department in implementing VDOE regulations pertaining to assistive technology.

  • Organizes and maintains an inventory of purchased equipment, devices, and apps that are being used by students all Henrico County schools.

  • Conducts AT evaluations with specific needs in the area of AAC.

  • Conducts and provides guidance for AT evaluations and trials in all areas of AT, and particularly in the area of AAC.

  • Assesses/observes/consults with students, teachers, therapists, families, and staff to help engineer systems for increased participation and communication.

  • Works with multi-disciplinary teams and families to identify communication needs and effective AT for accommodation and language development.

  • Designs and supports implementation of plans for students with communication needs

  • Stays abreast of best practice in the field in AAC.

  • Explores, learns, and tests devices for compatibility within school context.

  • Ensures that AT is compatible with the school environment, including classrooms and technology platforms

  • Trains teachers, families, and therapists on using AT supports and enhancing language communication opportunities.

  • Creates training materials for workshops, websites, or published resources.

  • Collaborates with members of the AT Department, HCPS Technology, and special education department

  • Facilitates IEP and school team problem-solving and consensus.




Minimum Qualifications


Must have a strong understanding of language development and the use of AT to accommodate and develop communication and knowledge of regulatory special education processes; strong consultation, facilitation, and coaching skills; effective presentation skills; strong computer technology background; and effective written and oral communication.

Valid license a speech language therapist OR licensure/certification in a specific assistive technology related field; Master's degree in special education or related field. Five (5) years of experience as a therapist in special education or equivalent with experience in supporting assistive technology needs of students OR three (3) years specific experience in assessing, training, and implementing assistive technology supports. Strong consultation, facilitation, and coaching skills; effective presentation skills; strong computer technology background; and effective written and oral communication.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.



Additional Information


The minimum salary for this 12-month/ 260-day position is $71,187 (Masters), or $74,604 (Doctorate). *Note: This salary is based on the recommended 2023-2024 financial plan. The 2023-2024 financial plan is not yet approved / adopted; scheduled for approval on May 11, 2023.

The annual salary for this position will be prorated based upon the official start date.
