Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Summary: This position supports the mission of the facility and HealthONE/HCA. The Certified Exercise Physiologist performs prescribed non-invasive cardiovascular procedures and stress testing to patients under the supervision of a cardiologist, advanced practice provider, and imaging leaders. Duties include scheduling, explaining procedures to patients, monitoring their responses to tests, equipment maintenance, and detailed record keeping/reporting ensuring optimal care/treatment of patients. The specialist also prepares patients, equipment and materials used in diagnostic procedures.

Specifically, the Certified Exercise Physiologist:

A. Determines appropriateness of stress test order and assign appropriate cardiac testing modality to be performed (i.e. Exercise Treadmill vs Non-Walking Lexiscan Stress Test SPECT or PET imaging).

B. Collects and/or reviews pertinent medical, historical, and medication information in order to perform the appropriate study prescribed by the physician.

C. Obtains informed consent prior to stress testing.

D. Evaluates baseline vital signs and EKG for appropriateness prior to initiating stress portion of exam

E. Coordinates stress procedure with Nuclear Technologists, Exercise Physiologist, and/ or Echocardiogram Sonographer

F. Operates, calibrates and maintains diagnostic equipment and records the patient's response.

G. Performs exercise, cardiac, nuclear, pharmaceutical, echo stress tests, Holter testing and analysis, and EKGs as prescribed.

H. Monitors and clinically manages patient during stress portion of study.

I. Recognizes chest pain, arrhythmias, life-threatening arrhythmias associated with stress testing responds/obtains appropriate and immediate assistance as needed.

J. Performs emergent interventions when indicated.

K. Ensures an accurate and readable recording using deductive reasoning to trouble shoot minor problems, makes adjustments as needed during the procedure, and prepares recordings for interpretation.

L. Works with physicians and serves as the technical expert on various Non-Invasive testing applications.

M. Assesses patient post stress for clinical instability and manage side effects of stress agents if required per established protocols.

N. Communicates with nursing and attending physicians regarding clinical findings and concerns and coordinates appropriate follow up.

O. Completes stress test report via CCW and written report.

P. Prepares preliminary reports for final interpretation by the cardiologist.

Q. Assists with computerized charting and order entry.

R. Assists with activities to improve department processes, facilitate testing and maintain quality to achieve optimal patient results.

S. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

What qualifications you will need:

  • BLS and ACLS required. ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist® (ACSM-CEP®) required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare related field required, preferred in exercise science. Master’s degree in clinical exercise physiology required.
  • Prior experience in a patient care related field preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other health care team members. Ability to work with others within a team to ensure quality patient care. Strong critical thinking skills. Ability to communicate with patients using auditory Input and Output.
  • Works under the direct supervision of APP/Cardiologist per CMS guidelines. Employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Work performance is reviewed by peers and managers.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
