Extension Assistant/Associate Professor or Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor – Horticulture, Natural Resources (Wasatch & Summit Counties)
Job description
Wasatch and Summit Counties were historically major agricultural communities. During the past few years the counties have experienced rapid residential growth increasing concerns related to water quality, water quantity and wise land use. Wasatch County is a watershed for metropolitan areas along the Wasatch Front and has three very large man-made reservoirs: Jordanelle, Deer Creek, and Strawberry; that serve culinary, irrigation, and recreational needs. The Provo River is a blue-ribbon fishery for fly-fishing. Tourism is a major business in the area. Scenic farmland is an asset that the local people would like to protect in both counties. Only one hour from Salt Lake City, and adjacent to Park City, Wasatch County was the cross-country and biathlon venue of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Geologically, the counties lie between the Great Basin and the Uintah Basin. Park City, in Summit County is world renowned for its ski resorts and alpine mountain beauty and is also the home to the USU Swaner Eco-Center and Preserve. The USU Extension office is located in Coalville, which is the county seat of Summit County.
The position requires knowledge of horticulture, urban water conservation, and natural resources related to the growing needs and changing demographics of the county. We welcome candidates with diverse interests and experience related to horticulture and natural resources.
The estimated start date for this position is January 1, 2023.
Rank will be commensurate with experience, qualifications and current rank. Appointment opportunities include Extension Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track), or Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor (non-tenure track). A Master's degree is required for Extension Assistant or Associate ranks. A Bachelor's degree and substantial professional experience is required for the Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor.
- Provide leadership to Extension activities focused in horticulture, Master Gardener programs, natural resources, and water conservation.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate horticulture and/or natural resource programs for adults.
- Develop partnerships and employ innovative approaches to reach existing clientele and new audiences, such as the creation of on-line and virtual courses and use of social media platforms.
- Work with on-campus specialists in developing applied research projects and delivering programs to clientele.
- Pursue internal and external funding to support Extension programming.
- Document impacts and produce scholarly publications based on Extension programming.
- Manage budgets, personnel, and volunteers.
- Partner with and serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.
- Serve and collaborate with other Extension and University personnel, community and government agencies, and stakeholders.
- An earned Master’s degree (tenure track) or Bachelor’s degree (professional practice) in the area of horticulture, plant science, natural resources, agronomy, Extension education, or another closely related field.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct educational programs.
- Experience in teaching adult audiences.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
- Ability to act as a liaison between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to perform essential job functions.
- Experience with program development and/or delivery related to horticulture, natural resources, urban water conservation, and small farm production.
- Experience with program development and/or delivery related to the Master Gardener program.
- Skills and experience with implementing applied research activities.
- Skills and experience with grant writing.
- Skills and experience with recruiting, supervising, and working with volunteers.
