JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Fair Housing Advocate
Salary Range: Depends Upon Experience
Position Summary: The Fair housing advocate will be available to families at CSA San Diego County office to provide counseling, individual casework and referral to conflict resolution. In addition, the Fair Housing Advocate will lead a number of workshops at key community events to provide additional accessibility and education for residents, landlords, tenant advocates and government and social service agencies. By increasing the availability of accurate information, promoting legal counsel and involving the city in addressing alleged housing discrimination cases based on federal, state and local fair housing laws
The Fair housing advocate will have a wide range of duties. The applicant must: Be organized in their work to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner, have excellent communication skills, and have a profound commitment to civil rights and social justice.
Organization Background: CSA San Diego County (www.c4sa.org) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation. We have decades of experience as advocates for fair housing, mediating tenant/landlord issues. Other issues CSA addresses include: hate crime prevention, civil rights of first generation immigrants, human trafficking, youth education, and voter education.
Fair Housing Advocate Duties and Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
- Maintain telephone hotline and provide education to callers and walk-in clients on all fair housing and housing discrimination related matters, including fair housing laws, rights and responsibilities, complaint investigation services.
- Complete case management and follow-up for each case which may require field visits for witness interviews, research and provide documentation.
- All incoming calls and walk-in requests for information must have through client information with date, name, address, zip code, city council district, problem, action or referral. This will also include demographic data pertaining to race/ethnicity, income, household size and ages and other information requested by the city
- Provide tracking of repeat fair housing violators and keep statistics to permit analyses of housing discrimination complaints and trends.
- Prepare necessary reports and refer cases to HUD, DFEH, Legal Aid or private attorney to initiate litigation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- BA degree in Social Service or related field
- Preferred knowledge of housing issues, community organizing
- Ability to work with diverse communities in a culturally sensitive manner
- Experience in public speaking
- Ability to remain flexible and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
- Minimum of one year of relevant experience strongly preferred
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Bilingual, English-Arabic strongly preferred
- Project management or coordination experience
- Detailed planning and implementation skills
- Demonstrated skills in writing and communication
- Ability to reach out effectively to low-income individuals and community-based organizations
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a wide variety of people and organizations
