Job description
MAD CAPITAL IS HIRING!
Mad Capital is a Boulder CO based company established to accelerate the regenerative and organic revolution in agriculture! We are working to finance and transition 10M acres of regenerative and organic farmland in the next 10 years by providing farmers with mission-aligned and useful financial products.
- WHY IT MATTERS - Through our reliance on industrial and extractive agricultural practices, we've systematically degraded ecosystems and created many of the largest challenges humanity has ever faced, from declining soil fertility, and dwindling rural wealth, to biodiversity loss, and climate change—and we're running out of time to fix it.
- WHY REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE - Regenerative organic agriculture is a system of farming principles and practices that focuses on maximizing the health of soil, people, and ecosystems. It takes a living systems approach, working with nature, rather than against it, and it actually isn't new. Forward-thinking farmers have been using many of these practices and tools for decades, but they need support if we're really serious about turning this thing around.
- WHY MAD CAPITAL - The idea of Mad Capital started in 2018 with the team developing, launching, and deploying a first-of-its-kind regenerative and organic agriculture investment fund. Today we're a nimble, well-capitalized team composed of exceptional individuals and dreamers supported by the broader MAD! ecosystem, our network of partners, advisors, mentors, investors, friends, and a growing community of like-minded folks working to build better agricultural systems around the world.
The Role
The regenerative revolution needs financing. Mad Capital is a specialty finance company that provides turn-key credit to regenerative organic farmers. The Farm Loan Advisor will be responsible for originating new farmer loan pipeline, closing new money loans, and maintaining existing borrower relationships. We focus exclusively on regenerative and organic farmers, meaning you have experience and are ready to drum up new business in a niche but fast-growing market.
We are farmer-first. We take pride in the relationships we have with the farmers we support. We operate from a place of shared vision and values.
You'll be getting on the ground floor at Mad Capital, helping us build out our eight-figure portfolio by converting an additional $25M in new money in 2023. Mad Capital has numerous relationships with major players in the regenerative and organic space. You are ready to take on managing those relationships to generate new business while developing more connections with similar organizations.
You love talking with farmers and collaborating with industry actors. It's your gift. You build trust quickly, can suss out if there's a ‘deal' early on, and like to be generous across your network. You're adaptable and ready to pivot on a dime if one strategy isn't working–from making cold calls, to showing up at the yearly conference. There is nothing ‘slick' about your sales strategy because there is nothing to be slick about. You are honest, humble and there to serve. You are authentic and care deeply about the success and well-being of the farmers, farm families and communities that we serve.
You work hard and don't just show up 9-5. You do what it takes to get the job done and to show up for our farmers when they are in need. This is not a role for someone who isn't ready to get their hands dirty and do the important work our food system needs. You are committed to our mission of creating a regenerative revolution in agriculture, and this commitment is reflected in your background of work in agriculture and food systems.
Organic agriculture currently represents 1% of all agricultural acres. As Farm Loan Advisor, you will have a unique opportunity to lay the tracks necessary to drive meaningful capital into this small but fast-growing market. For us to regenerate our landscapes at scale, we are going to need all of the help we can get.
This is an opportunity to make a deep impact and meaningfully contribute to the growth of a thriving organization in the business of helping regenerative organic farmers. For most of us, work is one of the largest time commitments we will ever make. In joining Mad Capital, you'll find a team of smart and caring professionals invested in building something bigger than themselves.
The Challenge
Mad Capital is an early-stage company focused on originating regenerative organic agriculture loans. More specifically, we have flexible and long-term transition loans targeted to organic farmers while also providing traditional credit. Your role is to find farmers in need of the type of capital we are offering, close the deal, and maintain a great relationship with them.
Your job is to generate revenue by building our portfolio while maintaining a viable margin for Mad Capital. As that portfolio grows you are ready to build and train a team to help increase our impact.
Primary Responsibilities
- ORIGINATE NEW LOANS - The primary responsibility for this position is (i) generating new leads, (ii) managing prospects in the pipeline, (iii) closing loans, and (iv) maintaining borrower relationships. You will be fielding phone calls, sending emails, texting, and generally in constant flow with our current and new farmers. You love calling up farmers to jumpstart a relationship, listening to their problems, and artfully becoming a helpful connection. This is a boots-on-the-ground position. We believe that showing up on the farm is critical for building and maintaining healthy lender-borrow relationships, including participation in regional field days, conferences, and on-farm events and meetings.
- MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS - You will spend a portion of your time managing our existing borrower relationships. We pride ourselves on our responsiveness and ability to be helpful beyond providing loans. You will advise farmers in our network to optimize future growth, access capital, and be ready to help them succeed over the long haul. Sometimes financing from Mad Capital will be a possible solution, other times it might be an alternative product or strategy. Regardless, you're here to help them out. You have the ability to manage 100+ ongoing relationships, ensuring no one is left in the dark.
Secondary Responsibilities
- BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - You will spend a portion of your time generating new leads through partnerships with national and global organizations in the regenerative and organic agriculture space. You should be familiar with most, if not all, of these organizations already.
- PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT - As Mad Capital develops new financial products and services, your voice will be invaluable. We're going to be looking to you to ensure we're on track to achieve product-market fit with new offers and bringing online the resources that will ensure our market thrives.
- LEADERSHIP - Mad Capital is a two-sided marketplace with farmers on one side and capital partners on the other. You will own and manage Mad Capital's current and future sales strategy. We will look to you for guidance.
- GROWTH - As Mad Capital grows its portfolio, you will be responsible for recruiting, onboarding, and training new sales team members. You will also be responsible for creating the playbook to generate and convert the pipeline that will drive the revenue engine.
Required Qualifications
- AGRICULTURE SALES TRACK RECORD - You have definitive sales experience with a demonstrable track record of generating new leads and closing business in excess of $10M+ per year (or equivalent in other ag verticals) while working remotely. You have a proven track record of leading, structuring, and closing transactions. This isn't your first rodeo.
- MIDWEST BOOTS ON THE GROUND - You're based in the midwest (IA, MN, NE, WI, and IL) and are ready to show up on farms to build and maintain new relationships.
- OVER THE PHONE SALES - You are comfortable getting to know farmers over the phone. We are a national company, and though the bulk of your work will be in the Midwest, we have accounts that span OR to VT.
- ENTREPRENEURIAL - You have a proven ability to jump between initiatives: from generating new leads via a national partnership through an input provider, to hopping on the phone cold calling for 5 hours, to finding a large farm deal with some hair on it. You're cross-functional and you understand your day-to-day will be highly variable.
Preferred Qualifications
- AGRICULTURE FINANCE - Agriculture finance is a particular debt market and you have the financial aptitude to quickly learn the nitty-gritty of agricultural finance if you don't already know it. Ideally, you have demonstrated credit and analytical skills and working knowledge of agricultural lending principles and practices.
- RELATIONSHIPS - You already have a strong network of farmers and are excited to materially expand your network with farmers across the US.
- SALES & ACCOUNTING MANAGEMENT - You have 5+ years of experience managing accounts and/or closing complex sales transactions. You partner with your clients to understand their needs, deliver solutions that meet their unique goals, manage complexity, and accelerate transactions to close.
- AMBITIOUS - Sales is a results-driven role and you have the drive to build and convert pipeline to generate revenue for Mad Capital. A large portion of this job's pay will result from sales outcomes.
- YOU KNOW THE TOOLS - You're comfortable in a modern, tech-enabled office environment. We leverage Slack, Google Suite, Dropbox, DocuSign, Monday, Asana, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and numerous other common products and services. In addition to these, you're comfortable with content management systems, and industry-standard design software, tools, and processes.
- INDEPENDENT & HIGH AGENCY - You're a self-starter able to function independently and adapt to changing priorities in a growing and fast-paced environment with a positive demeanor and good instincts.
- YOU'RE READY FOR A CHALLENGE - You are creative, constantly learning, and approach setbacks and challenges with curiosity.

We don't have time to mess around! To curb the current use—and reverse the legacy—of industrial and extractive agricultural practices, we need to direct billions of dollars into the regenerative organic space as soon as possible. We need ambitious, creative, and empathetic people like you to get this done. With this need in mind, we have an amazing opportunity for an experienced, finance-oriented Farm Loan Advisor to join the revolution in agriculture!
BENEFITS
- GENEROUS COMPENSATION - You work hard and will be compensated for it. Mad Capital determines a candidate's compensation package throughout the interview process based on experience, expertise, and other factors and the final compensation package will be discussed with you during later-stage interviews. That said, the structure will generally reflect the following:
- Base Salary - $75,000 - $125,000 per year.
- Bonus - A performance-based cash bonus package of up to 100% of base salary.

- REQUIRED TIME OFF - Employees are expected to take all bank holidays off (13 days) and are required to take at least 1 week of mandatory vacation per quarter. We're very flexible, but we've found that a minimum requirement helps ensure folks take much-deserved time for themselves.
- DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT - Mad Capital is deeply committed to the personal and professional development of all team members. We support this work with mentorships, community introductions, brown bags, and a flexible work schedule so you can fit it all in.
- NEW FRIENDS - Here at Mad Capital we're building a team composed of people we like and want to spend time with. People from different paths who think about the world a little differently and challenge others to do the same. We're constantly planning company trips, get-togethers, and learning opportunities.
Additional Considerations
- LOCATION - This is a remote position, for someone located in the Upper Midwest. Mad Capital currently has 1 remote and 4 in-person team members.

- REPORTING - You will report directly to Mad Capital's Chief Executive Officer.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
QUALIFICATIONS - We're committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace in which all team members have an opportunity to contribute to the success of our mission.
