Summary/Objective
The Volunteer Coordinator is a part time position responsible for managing the Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) Volunteer program. The Volunteer Coordinator trains the volunteer base to serve as guides in the building, supports educational needs, assists with special events, and interprets traveling and current exhibits. This position also supervises and motivates volunteers and must be deeply interested in the Flint Hills region so they can convey its value to others.
Essential Functions
- Manages the FHDC volunteer program.
- Solicits feedback from FHDC staff members, guests, and members of the public to evaluate volunteer performance and additional assignments.
- Develops internal volunteer opportunities with accompanying position descriptions in partnership with FHDC education and exhibit staff.
- Develops a recruitment strategy and alternative recruitment events to market benefits of the FHDC volunteer program to the community.
- Works with guests from a wide range of back grounds and varied levels of visitor behavior.
- Develops and implements an electronic database system to track volunteer skills, performance, and availability.
- Coordinates with marketing to develop volunteer promotion/campaign.
Supervises and manages FHDC volunteer staff.
- Recruits, selects, supervises, and evaluates volunteers.
- Informs volunteers of duties and responsibilities with an orientation manual, regularly scheduled group sessions, and list serve.
- Maintains daily schedule for volunteers for guest service, store, education programs, interpretive volunteers of exhibits, and other areas as needed.
- Coordinates volunteers for special activities.
- Trains volunteers in the use of interpretive techniques to involve guests in active learning in the building.
- Develops recognition programs for retention of volunteers.
- Maintains communication among volunteers by producing newsletters and other communication resources.
Performs additional duties as required.
- Attends meetings and training.
- Prepares reports.
- Manages stress brought about by interacting with potentially irate and/or defensive customers.
- Ensures compliancy with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of volunteer management experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or associate degree in Human Resources or a related field.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Experience in computer technology and office practice.
- Personal experience with volunteering.
