The Stanford School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Financial Risk Manager to help strategize, develop, and promote a school-wide program to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor financial risk, focusing on fraud and error prevention and detection. This new role will be a member of the School of Medicine's Office of the Chief Financial Officer, reporting to the Associate Director of Financial Risk Management, and will be integral to our mission to foster a sound ethical culture supported by effective processes and structures which help mitigate financial risk.
The manager will develop data-driven risk assessments and work with school leadership and university partners to assess and manage financial risk factors, reduce opportunities for fraud/error, and enable timely detection without compromising operational efficiency. The manager will be integral to the School's efforts to propagate excellence in financial stewardship.
Duties include:
- Collaborate with others across the School and University and serve as a subject matter expert to build a culture around financial risk management.
- Develop and perform reviews of complex financial analyses for senior leadership to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor potential financial risk within the School of Medicine.
- Manipulate and analyze large data sets to provide financial transparency and innovative solutions.
- Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, advising on improvement opportunities that reduce financial risk, prevent fraud/error, and establish an appropriate balance with operational obligations.
- Identify and promote best practices, processes, and tools that reduce and remediate vulnerabilities for internal and external fraud and other financial risks.
- Provide strategic analysis for various senior leadership presentations, consolidating data in a format easily understood by all stakeholders and used to make high-profile decisions.
- Act as a responsible steward of university resources by ensuring funds are used appropriately, supporting the mission, and complying with policies and donor intent.
- Lead special projects impacting the entire School of Medicine, such as developing school-wide financial policies and procedures.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong knowledge of business process improvement methodology; able to view and address business problems with a systems perspective.
- Expert proficiency in business applications, such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office suite.
- Excellent leadership, communication and presentation skills with the demonstrated ability to influence and motivate others including senior leadership.
- Ability to think strategically while attentive to details.
- Strong financial management and analysis skills.
- Strong knowledge of accounting and financial practices and systems.
- Internal audit or forensic accounting experience.
- Experience working in an academic environment.
- Advance experience in data analytics and visualization.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Expert proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
- Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning and financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
- Knowledge of GAAP.
- Advanced professional communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
- Advanced project management skills and ability to lead large multi-functional teams.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly sitting.
- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
- Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
- Rarely reach/work above shoulder.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Routine extended working hours during peak cycles; travel to school/unit sites across the university.
- This position can be 100% remote or hybrid (working on-site and working from home). A few days a week will need to be on-site if hybrid, subject to operational needs.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $124,000 to $175,000 per annum.
