Job description
We are looking to hire a hard-working and skilled fitter to fabricate, fit, and assemble the structural components of various mechanical systems. To be successful as a fitter, you should be detail-oriented, focused, and adept at interpreting blueprints. Ultimately, an exceptional fitter should be able to safely use hand and power tools as well as demonstrate excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Production Supervisor, the Fitter position is responsible for fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques in accordance with product specifications and production schedules. A Fitter specializes in fitting tubular structures and reading blueprints. As a Fitter, the incumbent will work in coordination with the Shift Supervisor and other senior management to ensure that the entire customer product is fit to the specifications of each job and meets the outlined requirements. Consistent production of quality UT passable welds is critical.
LOCATION: MICA Steelworks Haltom City, Texas Plant
CURRENT SHIFTS:
- Monday - Friday, 5:00 PM - 3:00 AM with Saturday, as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 to 2 years fitter experience required
- Overhead and Jib crane experience needed
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal incumbent must possess:
- Ability to set up equipment, organize and layout workstation appropriately
- Knowledge of a variety of welder concepts, practices and procedures
- Firm knowledge of welding symbols, welding diagrams, blueprints/ shop drawings, and/or other printed instructional material in the welding of products or part
- Ability to use welding equipment such as torches, torch tips, and Air Arc
- Ability to use temperature sticks and welding fillet gauges
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures (sometimes due to season)
- Ability to work additional hours, as needed
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to read, understand and follow job order specifications engineering drawings, and/or work orders
- Analyzing the blueprints for mechanical systems to determine the specifications of the components to be constructed.
- Ability to perform a variety of specific tasks, such as, set-up, laying out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts and/or rework finished products
- Lays-out, positions, aligns, fits, tack-welds, assembles and installs valves, hangers, pipe and fittings composed of metals such as iron and steel using hand tools, roustabouts, grasshoppers, come-alongs, chin falls and power tools.
- Bend pipe by hand or with a pipe-bending machine. Fills pipe systems with water or air to determine system leaks.
- Ability to work with fitters or fitters/welders to assist in the fabrication of multi-component parts
- Ability to operate hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torch, and other hand tools related to the job’s needs
- Ability to inspect and correct pipefitting as necessary to meet product specifications
- Ability to examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Ability to perform job-specific procedures, such as, clamping, holding, tack-welding, heat bending, grinding, or bolting component parts to obtain required configurations and positions
- Demonstrated willingness to cross-train and perform the work of other job tasks in addition to the primary assigned position
- Ability to maintain functionality of equipment
- Ability to maintain quality pipefitting and UT passable welds
- Ability to maintain production level as determined by supervisor
- Must display a positive attitude and willingness to learn and participate in a changing environment to reach a common goal
- Must maintain production and quality of finished products
- Must operate equipment safely and maintain safe working habits
- Must be able to perform a variety of other tasks as assigned
- Constructing structural components from raw materials.
- Inspecting fabricated components to ensure that they are the correct size.
- Utilizing shears, power saws, cutting torches, and chipper knives to cut structural components as needed.
- Replacing damaged or defective structural components as needed.
- Adhering to all work-site safety rules and regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Full time shop exposure.
2. Extreme temperatures. (Sometimes due to season).
3. No travel requirements.
4. Perform work standing up for 8-10 hours per day and up to 6 days a week.
5. Good vision, hearing, smell and balance.
6. Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
7. Ability to stand, bend, stoop, squat or kneel regularly as well as climb stairs and ladders.
8. Must wear OSHA required PPE equipment while working, including OSHA approved welding hood, if welding
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Employee is expected to participate in appropriate continuing education as may be requested and/or required by their immediate supervisor. Employee must attend mandatory education programs.
