Job Title: Front End Head Clerk
JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a primary contact for Safeway customers, the Front End Head Clerk provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. The Head Clerk may be assigned one or more specific areas of the store to coordinate. Supervises the work of all store employees.
The Head Clerk is in charge of the store and has the authority to make necessary decision to operate the store at maximum profit, efficiency with superior customer service. The Head Clerk conducts store walks to ensure store standards and conditions as defined by company policies. Scans out of stock count and maintains proper stock conditions. The Head Clerk is responsible for employee performance and training. The
Head Clerk may also acts as an All Purpose Clerk-Checker and operates self check- out. May perform basic cash management procedures. May write schedules and conduct yearly performance evaluations on employees for whom there is continuous and regular supervision. The Head Clerk may be responsible for ordering, displaying and merchandising product. Supervises cleaning and sanitation in areas of responsibility. The Head Clerk is required to practice and enforce safe food handling procedures. May be required to work in any of the grocery departments within the store. Answers customer complaints or inquiries. The Head Clerk must demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and integrity and provides positive leadership to ensure maximum employee productivity. The position is hourly non-exempt. The Head Clerk reports to the Store Manager and/or 1st and 2nd Assistant Managers.
JOB DUTIES:
Front End Head Clerks are responsible for the following job duties:
1. Provides customer service as defined by the employer within the scope of the position and within company policy. Trains, observes and coaches all employees to ensure the highest standards of superior customer service are being met.
2. Supervises store employees in the presences or absences of Store Manager.
3. Responsible for handling emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents according to Safeway guidelines and policies.
4. Responsible for afternoon replenishment of out of stock shelf conditions and out of stock count.
5. Position is high stress and requires a high degree of flexibility.
6. Must have a basic knowledge of company rules, policies and procedures, and union contract.
7. Performs complete store walks, delegate tasks and follows through to ensure completion.
8. Monitors in stock conditions and replaces product as needed.
9. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment within the store.
10. Assists cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
11. Responsible for performing basic office functions.

12. May be required to work in any of the grocery departments within the store. (See appropriate Job Descriptions).
13. May be responsible for competing open and close of day functions in the cash office.
14. Enforces proper dress code and employee conduct.
15. Adheres to Federal, State, local laws, Safeway policies and store rules.
16. Other duties as assigned.

1. Ability to follow company customer service procedures. Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
2. Must meet the minimum requirements to interview and pass interview for promotion.
3. Ability to multi task while working under stress and time constraints.
4. Ability to make quality decisions and work without supervision.
5. Good oral and written communication.
6. Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to read, retain and comprehend.
7. Basic math and computer skills.
8. Ability to complete tasks assigned in expected time frame.
9. Willingness to adapt, be highly flexible and take initiative.
10. Ability to complete required Safeway web based training and appropriate food safety, HIPPA, Privacy, Patriot Act Certificates.
11. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
12. Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
13. Ability to work varied shifts over a 24 hour operation.
14. Must be able to multi task and make quality decisions while working under stress and time constraints.
15. Basic knowledge of shrink programs and related audits
16. Desired: Prior experience as a clerk or manager.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
All store employees in the presence or absence of Store Manager.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside: 95% Outside: 5% Temperature Extremes: Varies depending on store location also may need to walk into freezers and refrigerators.
Chemicals: Rarely (cleaners, degreasers)

Computer, calculator, telephone/intercom, grocery carts, six-wheelers, cash register, scanner, box knife, bailer, pallet jack, power lift, power mule, pallets, milk cases, order gun, baskarts, trash compactor, temperature gun, temperature controllers, slicers, scales, ladders, garbage disposal, fax, copier, Lotto, Western Union and money order machine, Coin Star, printer, IDL equipment, security cameras/devices, TV, VCR, compressors, generators and time clock.

Rarely, may use ladder or stepstool to change signs, access roof. Occasional while stocking or facing product on high shelves. May need to climb stairs to second floor break room/offices/restrooms.
Trunk Functions:
Frequent neck rotation and bending of head. Frequent bending/stooping, twisting, crouching, squatting. Occasional kneeling.
Upper Extremity:
Constant handling/grasping. Frequent fine finger manipulation and repetitive motion.
Occasional forceful gripping.
Vision:
Depth perception used to move about store area. Near vision is used to operate computer keyboard and view screen, to operate cash register, make correct change, and complete forms and papers. Far vision is used to locate carts in the parking area, to inspect the store for cleanliness, and to perform other functions.
Hearing:
Hearing is essential to listen to customers and employees, to receive information via telephone, intercom or IDL.
Speech:
Speech is essential to provide information and instructions to employees, to speak over the telephone/intercom, and to talk to customers.
