Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Education Specialist for Gallery Education and under direct supervision, the Gallery Educator I teaches, researches, designs, implements, and facilitates education-based programs to inspire life-long learning. Additionally, the Gallery Educator I trains and mentors volunteers to teach in gallery programs at Getty. The successful candidate develops and maintains knowledge of the museum’s collections, art history, and pedagogy through research, discussion with educators, curators, conservators, and other colleagues.

Gallery educators are responsible for covering weekend and holiday rotations when the Museum is open to the public.

Major Job Responsibilities:
  • Teaches frequently in the galleries with Getty’s diverse visitors.
  • Conducts scholarly research in preparation for presenting gallery tours, talks, presentations, and innovative educational programs.
  • Collaborates with project teams and work groups to create innovative educational programming and ideas.
  • Under supervision, works to define and model best practices in gallery teaching with the general public and K-12 school group visitors.
  • Demonstrates professional commitment to DEAI priorities that are in alignment with Getty’s DEAI Plan.
  • Effectively develops and produces teaching plans for workshops, sessions, courses, and other cross-Education projects promoting critical thinking and close-looking for current and emerging audiences.
  • Supports the Docent Program by interviewing, recruiting, training, managing, and mentoring docents.
  • Supervises docents’ teaching though observations; oversees progress and provides guidance and mentorship; provides feedback and pedagogic guidance; performs regular docent briefings.
  • Provides continuing education for docents; generates topics and activities that foster growth and quality teaching.
  • Contributes to the day-to-day management of the Docent Program.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Art History, Art Education, Studio Arts or related field required
  • 1-3 years of teaching experience, preferably in a museum setting
  • Fluency in a foreign language, preferably Spanish

  • Experience teaching diverse audiences in a museum or education environment, preferably in a museum setting
  • Fluency in languages other than English, preferably Spanish
  • Knowledge of studio art, arts education, and museum education theory and practice
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
