The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) seeks an experienced field geologist to work on USGS-funded STATEMAP geologic mapping projects. The successful candidate will use geologic knowledge and field mapping techniques, utilize GIS, and contribute expertise in one or more of the following subdisciplines: metamorphic petrology, structural geology, geochronology, igneous petrology, or geochemistry. This is a long-term nonpermanent position lasting at least two years, with the possibility of extension pending the availability of additional funding.

Mission and Culture
The DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). DGGS STATEMAP projects conduct mapping to establish a geologic framework and to solve critical Earth science problems. This position will provide mapping and data to support the assessment of landslide hazards, understand the structural framework, and answer research questions in the northern Cordillera, and collect baseline measurements and data on mineral occurrences and resources.

Core Responsibilities
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Participate in one or more bedrock geologic mapping field projects as a mapping geologist.
• Contribute journey-professional level geologic expertise to all stages of the geologic mapping process, including planning, fieldwork, data compilation, and publication of maps and their associated reports and data releases.
• Participate in boat and helicopter supported field work to gather geologic data.
• Use geographic information systems (GIS) and other software to create geologic maps and manage and analyze geologic data.
• Assist with drafting figures, photo/image processing, and laboratory data.
• Assist with project logistics and procurement.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is based in the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys office in Fairbanks, Alaska. The nature of the geologic mapmaking process requires frequent interaction and collaboration with other members on the STATEMAP team and with the GIS, data management, and publications specialists at the DGGS Geologic Information Center. Field travel may be by helicopter, boat, all-terrain vehicle, and on foot, carrying a heavy backpack. Field geologists must be able collect rock samples and record detailed and accurate geological observations using a GPS-enabled mobile field tablet/computer.

Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a motivated field geologist with a strong background in igneous and/or metamorphic petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, and field data collection, as well as a working knowledge of GIS applications and geodatabase management. Experience in geologic mapping, hard rock geology, and Alaska geography is preferred. Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
AND
One year of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering. This experience is met by service as a Geologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any science major, which includes the completion of 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in the above geoscience fields and 24 additional semester hours (36 quarter hours) of course work in natural sciences, may substitute for the education requirement.

Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate level education in the geoscience fields described above are acceptable and will be considered as follows: 24 graduate semester hours=one full year of graduate education=one full year of professional experience.
