SUMMARY & SCOPE OF POSITION:

Under general supervision of the Director of the Indian Child Welfare Act (“ICWA”) Department, the Health Educator plans, implements, and evaluates health education and/or clinical training programs, conferences, and other associated activities for individual, group, and/or community needs. Collaborates with other health specialists to ascertain health needs, develop desirable health goals, and determine availability of professional health services. Develops and maintains cooperation between public, civic, professional, and voluntary agencies. May specialize in specific healthcare professions, such as neonatology, substance and alcohol abuse, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, develops, and designs health education and training programs, including preparation, facilitation, and follow-up.
  • Evaluates programs; performs research on relevant topics and develops and/or revises curriculum modules and/or presentation materials as appropriate.
  • Presents lectures and training to groups and/or individuals, as
  • Coordinates the activities of consultants, agencies, and other providers involved in specific programs.
  • Participates in the development of marketing and promotional goals and strategies, as appropriate; may write grant proposals and seek funding for programs.
  • Serves as a point of contact in area of expertise; refers clients to other support services, such as medical evaluation and treatment, social services, and employment services, as appropriate.
  • Prepares and disseminates educational and informational materials.
  • May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Must have knowledge of Tribal organization, and services provided by the Social Services/Indian Child Welfare Act Department, Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or similar.
  • Knowledge of child welfare
  • Knowledge of community resources for various Counties where Tribal Families
  • Sensitive to the diverse needs of families.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk, and hear. There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with vendors and staff. The employee must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.

There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with a wider variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.


PRCI TRIBAL PREFERENCE:

Second, after preference is provided to enrolled Tribal Members, Native Americans who are enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe other than Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians shall be provided preference over equally qualified non-Indian candidates, however, if the non-Indian candidate is more qualified, a business decision may be made to hire or promote the best candidate. If more than one person at the same preference level meets the Minimum Qualifications, the decision-makers shall have discretionary authority to make the appropriate business decision in the best interest of the Tribe. Accordingly, when preparing job descriptions or job announcements care should be taken to establish qualifications that fit the desired needs of the position.
