This Opportunity

WSP’s Applied Solutions Group (AS) is currently seeking a Health, Safety and Environmental Supervisor (HSES) to implement, monitor, and evolve the safety program at project sites North America. This is an exciting opportunity to support a growing and vibrant Company that works on interesting and challenging construction projects across the United States. Most of the projects involve work that has an environmental remediation component or are focused on improving the environment. We offer significant opportunities for growth and advancement. This position can be based anywhere in the United States but will require extensive travel to project specific locations, competitive per-diem and travel allowances are included. The position requires a knowledgeable self-starter who can balance priorities and work with various stakeholders to maintain compliance with regulatory, client and internal HSSE requirements.

Your Impact

Reports to the AS Safety Director with daily direction provided by the Project and Construction Manager
At a minimum, the HSES is responsible for:
  • Review work plans and safety SOPs to ensure they meet WSP and Project specifications
  • Develop, conduct, and track/record daily and monthly required safety briefings
  • Develop task-specific Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and work methods for hazardous work
  • Ensure workers have proper levels of safety training and coordinate overall task-specific safety training where required
  • Maintain safety training database by entering all required training in a timely manner
  • Ensure proper personal protective equipment is available and used by work crews
  • Review all subcontractors JHAs prior to procurement of services to ensure subcontracted work methods address identified and potential hazards and comply with WSP and client safety SOPs
  • Conduct regulatory and customer required safety training
  • Obtaining Qualified/Competent Person status for scaffolding, fall protection, etc.
  • Interface with managers, supervisors, team leads, and team members on safety aspects of work efforts to promote open communication
  • Conduct or support occupational and perimeter air monitoring programs
  • Collect and document site Postings and OSHA required information for state and corporate reporting
  • Respond to and report incidents and near-misses and coordinate incident investigations, work within the Company HS database system
  • Conduct behavior based safety observations and prepare Lessons Learned on best practices
  • Conduct, document, and report all required monthly and annual safety audits

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent (college degree preferred)
  • 7+ years construction/field H&S experience
  • Ability to support construction projects throughout the US
  • Ability and willingness for extensive travel in the US
  • Experience in managing the health & safety of facility O&M craftsmen, preferably at a Federal government site, and environmental professionals performing contracted services
  • Strong technical knowledge and background in regulatory standards and safety engineering
  • Experience in performing multi-task projects with tight completion deadlines
  • Good working knowledge and skills using MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Demeanor that promotes collaboration, teamwork, safety consciousness, open-mindedness with positive approach to problem solving
  • Experience in developing and presenting safety training materials
  • Experience in managing the training requirements for construction/trade workers
  • Experience in assessing work hazards and developing safe work procedures
  • Experience in briefing work crews and building occupants in the safety aspects of maintenance/construction work
  • Training in OSHA safety and/or industrial hygiene programs related to, construction, and environmental/infrastructure field work
  • Must pass background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) or STS (Safety Trained Supervisor)
  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction Training and/or USACE EM 385-1 40 hour training
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training with current certification
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Ability to pass a standard background check to access Department of Defense facilities
  • Construction related competent person/safety training (Scaffold, Fall Protection, Excavation, Forklift)

Physical Demands


  • Body - Position requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, ability to work extended work shifts and rotating schedules to meet project demands
  • Communication - Position requires expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and written documents;
  • Hearing - Position requires perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction, the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and the ability to make fine discriminations in sound
  • Seeing - The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes
