LVN-Expectations
County Correctional Health Services
The LVN Performs a wide variety of Vocational Nursing duties, including hands-on care, testing, and treatment of patients, interviewing patients and assisting them in follow-up care, maintaining medical and medication supplies, assisting in emergency medical treatment, administering medications, and maintaining charts and records.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Interview and observe patients to ascertain medical history and current condition, review patient records, take vital signs, record and report all information.
Prepare examination room, assemble treatment supplies, prepare patients for examination, and assist Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians in examination and treatment of patients.
Perform various tests and treatments such as hypodermic injections, blood draws, tuberculin skin tests, immunizations, pregnancy tests, EKGs, hearing tests, vision tests, and asthmatic inhalation therapy.
Administer oral and topical medications, observe patients for normal and abnormal reactions, record results, and notify appropriate staff as necessary.
Instruct individual patients on follow-up care, birth control, communicable disease prevention, hygiene, and general health care, as needed for specific medical condition.
Make appointments and referrals for patient regarding medical care, social services, and psychiatric services.
Maintain records, inventory, and physical security of drugs and medical supplies; sets up and stocks medication cart, crash cart, and dispensary medications and supplies.
Maintain infection control by using universal precautions.
Clean and sterilize equipment and furniture.
Assist in emergency medical treatment, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
Perform simple laboratory work, and prepares specimens for delivery to laboratory, obtains tests results, and notify patients of test results.
Report suspected cases of abuse and neglect of children or adults to proper authorities, according to procedures and protocols.
Respond to inquiries from patients
Keep accurate records, charts and case files.
Attend and participate in training demonstration sessions, and in-service educational programs to attain and maintain nursing skills.
Testify in court regarding medical test results and treatment.

Knowledge Of
Vocational Nursing Principles, Procedures, and Techniques (BVNPT Article 2; 2859-2873)
State of California laws and regulations on Licensed Vocational Nursing
Proper handling and administering of biologicals
Standard medical record-keeping
Interviewing techniques
Common current Medical Terminology
Use and care of medical equipment used in clinical and infirmary settings
Basic medical indications of alcoholism and drug abuse and their overdoses
Basic behavioral indications of mental disturbance
Basic laboratory testing procedures
Current standard asepsis protocols
Basic symptoms and treatment of communicable diseases
Common drugs and medications used for birth control, communicable diseases, immunizations, and allergies
Cardiovascular conditions and substance overdoses, including their contra- indications and normal and abnormal results
Universal Precautions
Electronic Charting system and MAR
Windows operating system and its applications
Ability To
Communicate with and gain the cooperation of patients of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
Work cooperatively with other medical care providers and staff
Comply with laws, rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures, including security requirements, applicable to the work unit
Chart all patient information and physician's orders
Gain cooperation of patients in treatment and follow-up care
Maintain patient confidentiality
Follow oral and written instructions, including standing orders, clinical protocols, orders for treatment and dispensary orders
Take patients vital signs
Use electronic charting (E-Chart) and electronic MAR (Admin-RX)
Resynchronize basic bluetooth device (Pill Call)
Pill Call assignment:
Example of typical duties:
Prep medications in totes/carts prior to leaving 2M area
Pull non-formulary, narcotic, liquid, and other necessary medications from AccuDose
Check in with custody and ask for stand-by for medication pass
Identify six rights of medication administration (medication, route, time, client dosage, and documentation)
Verify patient via wristband; If no wristband available have custody confirm via identification card in control
Administration of medications via all routes
Use EMR (Admin-RX and scanner)
Identify patient/inmate cheeking
Document in eChart all incidents of cheeking and make appointment for MD chart review
Medication refusals require fully completed refusal form with patient signature and nurse administering medication or staff witness and nurse administering medication
Document in MARS
Follow up and administer essential early return court medications, new orders (valid first doses processed through HMM), and newly transferred patient's medications on your assigned units
Pass TID medications at ordered times
Return medications not administered via pharmacy return box (non-narcotic) and AccuDose (narcotic)
Place completed forms for scanning (i.e: refusals, cheeking)
Place completed medical, dental, & JPS kites in appropriate locations
Diabetic checks and insulin administration
Document blood sugar and insulin given
Training of other LVN's
Rotation of assignments
Other duties as applicable
TB Nurse assignment:
