In Home Caregiver
Job description
Schedule: About 11 hours total per week, see bullet points for details. The schedule has some wiggle room for starting or ending at different times based on what the DSP needs. A DSP who can do all days is preferred but not required. Ideally the dad would like someone who could do school drop off and pick up, but that is also not required.
- Mon/Wed/Fri morning routine before school, 7-8am.
- Monday after school 4:30-6:30pm
- Tues & Wed 5:30-7:30pm
- Friday 2/2:30-4/4:30pm
Employees looking for more hours can work with additional clients at different times.
Client is a 9-year-old girl, MTF. She needs trans-friendly worker. She has fetal alcohol syndrome. She has great communication and is really smart, but certain things she has a really hard time understanding. She is physically able to do things but struggles cognitively with executive dysfunction, an inability to keep track of time, getting distracted by sensory inputs, getting dysregulated, etc.
Overall, she needs someone to guide her through things, to help her remember the steps of her routines and to keep the house and her personal spaces clean and safe (including helping her with hygiene, tidying up throughout the day, eating, bathroom, etc.).
For example, she needs help noticing that she smells bad and needs to take a shower, and she then needs help remembering each step (go in the bathroom, take clothes off, get in, stop the shower after she's finished, get out, put on PJs, hang up towel, make sure the floor isn't too wet, etc.). She can get distracted by sensory inputs that feel good and not realize she's making a mess. The DSP does not need to clean up after the client, but can help prevent her from making a big mess, or help her learn how to clean up after herself. If it's too big of a mess for her to handle, the DSP can alert the client's dad to take care of it.
She is not physically violent at all but can yell and be loud at times. It takes her a long time to realize what the sensory issues are that are upsetting her. Smells and light can be really overpowering for her. Her dad has a lot of accommodations set up in the home to help prevent triggering her. The DSP needs to look at things from a neurocognitive perspective rather than a behavioral perspective, because her brain is different from a normal child's, and her reactions are usually not a behavioral issue but simply because, depending on the day, her cognitive ability to handle situations can change a lot.
DSP needs to not be timid. Needs to be someone who can be patient and understanding, who won't take the client's reactions personally or see it as willful defiance. Someone who can be flexible with the routine as best as possible depending on the day.
