Job Description Summary
JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for developing and delivering curriculum in the Industrial Process Operations Program, including on-line and face to face classes. The position is also responsible for assisting with maintaining good relations with industry partners, bringing in students and industrial customers for trainings, assisting in evaluating and developing new curriculum, and assisting SOE students in obtaining internships and job placements.

Duties & Responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES
  • Serves as lead or assistant instructor for courses as assigned. Prepares lectures, labs and assignments. Selects text books. Monitor and records student attendance. Delivers curriculum. Maintains labs and equipment. Grades assignments.


  • Communicates with students, potential students, and corporate partners regarding course content, scheduling, registration and payments.

  • Collaborates with other instructors and Program Coordinator to develop schedules for trainings.

  • Maintains equipment in the laboratory, making laboratory arrangements for practical sessions and giving materials to students for practical purposes.

  • Occasionally execute the role of academic advisor to students in which they will clarify any doubts and answer questions regarding the lesson they have discussed.

  • Collaborates with Dean, other SOE staff, and others to develop, build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners.

  • Collaborates in the creation of new and updated technical training courses for industry; designs, develops, implements and evaluates technical training.

  • Travels to high schools, career fairs, and industry locations to develop and deliver site specific training, to promote SOE programs, and to promote SOE students and graduates for internships and employment.

  • Assists in the recruitment, hiring, and training of program faculty.

  • Consults in the management of program budgets as requested.

  • Participates in industry groups and program Advisory Committee.

  • Contributes to program accreditation functions.

  • May assist in resolving staff and student issues.

  • Performs related duties.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of American industrial safety standards, priorities, and best practices.

  • Knowledge of electric power industry, oil and gas industry and manufacturing industry operations.

  • Knowledge of water treatment and waste water management is a plus.

  • Knowledge of OSHA training and testing methods.

  • Knowledge of business and college operating principles.

  • Skill in time management

  • Skill in oral and written communication, specifically including the ability to read, interpret and present safety related regulations in common language and the ability to explain concepts in multiple ways.

  • Computer skills to handle various college systems and to access information online.

  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.

  • Skill in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Dean of the School of Energy assigns work in terms of program goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of program activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Technology Advisory Council guidelines, OSHA and other organizational standards, and college policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position may develop program guidelines.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied instructional duties, administrative duties related to instruction, and a large amount of communications interface with corporate partners and the public. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to provide high quality instruction and to promote the growth and development of the college’s Industrial Process Operations Program through the success of students in those classes, communication with potential students and corporate partners, and identification and development of new curriculum. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective education of students and to the safe operations and overall success of businesses.

CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, industry representatives, and members of the general public.

  • Substantial time will be spent communicating with industry representatives about the content of SOE programs in order to encourage those representatives to partner with SOE for training, to intern SOE students, and hire SOE graduates.

  • Substantial time will be spent collaborating to identify and evaluate ways to improve and expand SOE’s programming, recommending specific curriculum, instructor skills, or equipment needed, and developing or obtaining those necessary assets.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, to negotiate or settle matters, or to motivate or influence persons.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while standing in front of a class and in a laboratory, sitting at a desk or table or intermittently sitting, standing, and stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the senses of hearing and smell.

  • Work may include travel, including travel by air and long distance travel by motor vehicle, and travel overnight.

  • The work is typically performed in an office, laboratory or classroom. The employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts, high voltage lines, steam lines and other equipment. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position may have direct supervision over less experienced program faculty.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the industrial processes field.


  • Industrial process knowledge and certifications are preferred.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of industrial employees, especially in the energy, power and manufacturing related industries, to be able to answer questions and provide relevant examples, usually associated with five or more years of industrial work experience or service.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
