Description

The Infection Preventionist works under the supervision of the Infection Prevention Program Manager and partners with leadership throughout PAMC in the prevention and mitigation of healthcare associated infections.

Provides coverage in the acute and community care setting. Assists with the review of microbiological reports. Maintains concurrent record review, data collection and data analysis. Assists in preparation to address infection control standards required by JCAHO and all infection control regulations required by federal, state, and local laws. Performs education and training to employees and physicians. Continues infection control activities in the absence of the program manager.

Job Duties:

  • Identify infectious disease processes that could potentially cause harm to patients, employees and the community; conduct outbreak investigations;
  • Assist the IP team in successfully implementing a region-wide Infection Prevention program.
  • Collect, process, and analyze surveillance data to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to decrease Health Associated Infections (HAI);
  • Report communicable diseases and HAIs to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) as required by law;
  • Consult with administration, medical staff, department managers, employees and patients regarding infection control practices, policies and procedures to ensure regulatory and professional standards are met;
  • Consult with hospital committees to formulate changes in the policies, procedures and/or processes to reduce the spread of infections; revise institution-wide policies related to identification of infection prevention issues and outbreak control and prevention;
  • Lead multidisciplinary collaborative teams to improve preventive practices, identify evidence-based research, and improve patient and institutional outcomes;
  • Develop and provide employee educational programs to keep employees updated on current infection control practices and their related responsibilities as required by regulatory agencies;
  • Assist with development and implementation of annual infection control plan for the Providence Alaska Medical Center and update as needed to meet regulatory requirements;
  • Review all labs daily to appropriately identify cases to report for resistant organisms, communicable diseases, and those warranting further clinical review by the Infection Preventionist;
  • Evaluate hospitalized patients for the presence of nosocomial, infectious or reportable disease using electronic data and conduct case review to evaluate organizational gaps in practices and formulate action plans in collaboration with leadership;
  • Evaluate products used in the facility to match infection to control standards and regulations;
  • Complete Environment of Care rounds in all areas of the facility biannually to evaluate organizational compliance and need for improvement or education to sustain regulatory preparedness;
  • Regulatory compliance, including Joint Commission, Alaska State Public Health, CMS, and OSHA;
  • Construction risk analysis and provide recommendations for compliance practices and facility designs;
  • Assist with antimicrobial stewardship program and provide recommendations.
  • Implement and comply with policies, practices, and processes of the infection prevention program at the ministry, region, and system level.
  • In collaboration with the Regional Manager of Infection Prevention Epidemiological Services, IP medical director, and IP peers, follow all current local, state, and federal guidelines, standards, and regulations.
  • Intermittent remote work reporting to the Anchorage, AK office is permitted.
  • Infrequent travel within the Alaska region.

Hours: Full-Time, 1.0 FTE, Day Shift, 40 Hours Per Week.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in laboratory science, nursing, public health or a related field and 2 years of experience in any healthcare or public health-related occupation. Employer will also accept Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, nursing, public health or a related field and 5 years of progressive, postbaccalaureate experience in any healthcare or public health-related occupation.
  • 1 year of experience in infection control, infection prevention, or epidemiology.
  • Experience working with regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Experience using epidemiological and statistical tools in an academic or professional environment.
  • Experience providing recommendations for infection prevention policies and practices in a healthcare setting.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within the Alaska region.
