Our team is currently seeking an Information and Publications Officer to help drive positive change within the Pacific Islands region. In this role, you will oversee a wide range of publishing activities for the Pacific Islands Development Program (PIDP) that includes identification and solicitation of prospective work through editorial development and review, graphic production, and distribution and marketing. You will also contribute to Center-wide communications efforts that include curating, coordinating, and promoting activities that support and align with EWC communications strategy.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INFORMATION AND PUBLICATIONS OFFICER
As the Information and Publications Officer, you will plan, design, and direct a comprehensive, integrated publishing program that brings to both scholarly and non-specialist audiences the results of research and related work in a manner that conveys the Center’s credibility and its distinctive perspective on Pacific Islands’ issues. Here are some of the key responsibilities you can expect in this role:
- Identify, draft, and publish relevant content that aligns with our mission, our strategic plan, and meets the needs of our key stakeholders.
You will seek out and identify prospective topics and authors, develop proposals, acquire manuscripts, and set standards for editorial development of all three publications series within PIDP. The content you deliver should be a mix of topics that is relevant to EWC audiences with a clear and engaging presentation of ideas that can sometimes be technical, complex, or abstract and writing that can successfully compete for the reader’s undivided attention. Finally, you will be responsible for each publication’s production and distribution.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local and regional partners to ensure program visibility and success.
Relationship-building is a key aspect of this role to ensure that the information and content you are delivering is relevant and appropriate. You will build trust and maintain collaboration with key partners, media outlets, scholars, policymakers, and commentators that will ensure our programs are well respected and have a positive impact on the communities we serve.
- Oversee copyrights and negotiate permissions to use material.
You will negotiate and execute contracts between the Center and external publishers to obtain permission for material from selected publications. You will also develop policies and procedures relating to copyright in coordination with legal counsel and advise on any issues pertaining to the program’s publications.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR THE ROLE
To be considered for this role, you will need to have the following qualifications and skills:
- Doctorate Degree and Previous Work Experience
You will need to possess a doctorate degree relevant to the work performed and a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in publications work related to the Pacific Islands. Experience should include In-depth knowledge of major Pacific Island domestic and international policy and social issues with a proven track record of developing and nurturing high-trust relationships and partnerships with Pacific Islander communities and organizations; of digital tools for managing and generating publications in multiple formats; of communication management and/or public relations across digital and print channels; and development and implementation of tailored communication strategies.
- Excellent Communication Skills
You will need to have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. You will need to be able to communicate effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and to navigate complex cultural and political dynamics. Your skills should also demonstrate the ability to also provide clear and concise instructions in a professional manner.
- Comfortable Working in a Fast-Paced, Dynamic Environment
You must be able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment. This role requires the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work effectively under pressure. You must be able to adapt to changing circumstances quickly and be comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty. Additionally, you must be able to work collaboratively with a team, as well as be self-directed and able to work independently.
- Able to Handle Sensitive and Confidential Information
You will have direct access to, and some involvement with, multilateral activities that are highly sensitive and have geopolitical significance and implications. Thus, confidentiality and privacy are of paramount importance. You will be held to a high standard of behavior in this regard and must be able to always maintain confidentiality and privacy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE
It is preferred that our ideal candidate possesses the ability to speak one or more indigenous languages of the region and has previous experience developing and monitoring grant proposals and projects involving multiple units and agencies in the Pacific region.

In these capacities, PIDP regularly engages in highly sensitive international communications and activities with elected and traditional leaders, senior officials, governments, and organizations.
