Job description

Designs training programs using a blended learning approach (classroom, webinar, self-study, e-learning, simulations, gamification, and related methods). Conducts research and works collaboratively with subject matter experts to develop new training courses and learning programs that include interactive activities and assessments.

Functions as material and template design owner; develops templates, style guides, and branding standards for the department. Audits department materials to ensure standards are met.

Provides subject matter expertise to support the integration of assessment/learning transfer/certification best practices into content design. Regularly evaluates existing courses to detect disconnects between learning and performance. Makes recommendations based on learning transfer data.

Performs classroom facilitation 20% of the time.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position reports directly to the Manager, Learning & Quality Service. No staff report directly to this position.


NATURE & SCOPE:

Fulfills tasks in these areas: Instructional Design/Course Creation, Learning Assessments/Learning Transfer, and Facilitation.

Instructional Design/Course Creation:

  • Conducts needs assessments to identify and align learning solutions with business outcomes
  • Researches, designs, develops, and implements new courses, as assigned. This work includes any pre- or post-course material, assessments before, during, or after the course, and creation of related items (PowerPoint, video, simulation, audio segments, etc.).
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and SMEs on training projects.
  • Identifies training project scope and manages project tasks.
  • Presents high level outline, project plan, and storyboard before developing materials.
  • Proofs work and ensures mechanics, formatting, spelling, and content are correct.
  • Applies group-selected instructional design principles to course creation, with particular focus on the use of cognitive science to ensure the creation of materials that are memorable, and targeted on behavioral changes
  • Develops activities within courses that are relevant, engaging, and support learning transfer.
  • Regularly and continually reviews facilitator and learner guides, as well as PowerPoint presentations, handouts, associated e-learning/self-study materials, and exercises to verify content is consistent and current across all related training materials
  • Creates e-learning courses, videos, and micro-learning segments, as appropriate, maximizing application of courseware tools.
  • Understands and applies the basics of HTML5 coding in the development of online training programs.
  • Verifies learning resource materials posted publicly (Intranet, LMS, etc.) are always the most current versions; removes any outdated items.
  • Shadows positions in branches and departments, as appropriate, to observe best practices or common areas where errors develop and obtain real-world examples to use in course scenario-building or as points of discussion.

Assessments/Learning Transfer

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of materials and provides recommendations.
  • Under the direction of the manager: researches, designs, validates, and implements a comprehensive assessments program for the learning function, which includes at least one certification program.
  • Functions as the group’s resource on learning transfer approaches and best practices.
  • Creates appropriate pre-test, in-course, and post-test assessments for courses, as applicable.
Reviews participant-submitted course evaluations to identify areas of opportunity in the design of the materials.
  • Coordinates with training operations specialist and/or department assistant manager if participant has not passed specific pre-work or post-work training tests/activities/simulations
Facilitation
  • Prepares fully for facilitator-led courses, including consulting with subject matter experts and reference sources to clarify any points of confusion or areas of conflicting information.
  • Prints all materials for self and participants (facilitator and learner guides; handouts; activity sheets; etc.).
  • Establishes all needed materials are ready for use during course activities.
  • Facilitates small and large in-person courses and webinars, applying meaningful audience engagement techniques and key cognitive learning principles.
  • Obtains answers to “parking lot” questions raised in classes, sharing responses

Special Projects

  • Completes tasks related to Learning Management System (LMS) applications, when assigned.
  • Leads learning needs analysis and related projects, when assigned.

Education:

Must have completed high school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in English, writing, communications, business, learning technology, education, or related field strongly preferred. Instructional Design, E-Learning Instructional Design, Adult Learning, or Needs Assessment certificate strongly preferred.

Experience:

Instructional Designer I
  • 1+ years instructional design (course design) experience required.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Excel) required.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop and audio/video editing software strongly preferred.
  • E-learning design/creation experience strongly preferred (working with tools such as Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate, Lectora, etc.).
  • 1-2 years of sales experience (sales or training position) strongly preferred.
  • 1-2 years of financial services experience (e.g. banking, credit unions, online financial services) strongly preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years facilitation experience strongly preferred.
Instructional Designer II
  • 3+ years instructional design (course design) experience required.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) required.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop and audio/video editing software strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to tolerate periods of continuous sitting and standing; ability to lift, carry, pull or push items up to 25 lbs.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Work is primarily performed within an enclosed classroom and cubicle office setting. Individual is subject to standard background noise found in that environment.
