POSITION PURPOSE
The Instructional Lab Technician is responsible for managing and administering the A&A Department teaching laboratories. These laboratories require upgrades, development of experimental equipment, coordination with faculty and teaching assistants, and scheduling and maintaining operations of the laboratories. Facilities include general undergraduate laboratories (including electronic equipment), structural testing equipment and supporting the machine shop. The Instructional Lab engineer will be responsible for inventory of instructional laboratories, maintenance, safety, proper storage of equipment and supplies, documentation and tools belonging to the laboratories.

The person in this position must possess modern laboratory and computer-related skills to be able to create and integrate data acquisition systems and unique new sensors with the demands of evolving technology, possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects.

This position has primary responsibility for Instructional lab administration and supervision. The position responsibilities may extend to supervising the AA Machine shop and Composite Lab as needed. This position reports to the Facilities Manager.

A&A is unique in that part of the engineering curriculum for undergraduates involves designing and testing a project related to flight or space. The facilities group and this role is critical to ensuring success for the students. Part of this role includes working in collaboration with classroom instructors and their supervisor, the facilities manager to ensure the research projects the students designed are feasible within the course timeframe. This requires a high level of professional judgment, communication skills and ability to be self-directed in tasks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Lab and Shop Operations 50%
  • Oversee lab setup and tear down for A&A lab courses.
  • Provide safety training and equipment training for TA’s of lab courses so they are able to appropriately support A&A courses.
  • Facilitate the quarterly check in with faculty teaching A&A lab courses to ensure there is a quarterly schedule for lab setups and training for TA’s and any GSA’s.
  • Participate as part of a staff team in supporting departmental capstone projects.
  • Support the Facilities Manager to coordinate and manage department labs & shop.
  • Conduct safety and equipment trainings for department labs and shops.
  • Observe and monitor students use of equipment; provide guidance and administer safety protocols.
  • Act as a Coral Administrator for department labs including the machine shop and composites lab.
  • Troubleshoot and repair routine equipment problems; escalate complex problems to the Facilities Manager in timely manner.
  • Collect supplies, setup experiments and support TA, GSA training for undergraduate lab courses.
  • Assist in senior design projects.
  • Actively participate in meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Keep track of supplies and order new supplies as necessary.
  • In collaboration with the facilities manager help to create and maintain a maintenance and upgrade plan for departmental spaces based on the curricular and accreditation needs of the department.
  • Supervise and train student employees (TA, GSA) as appropriate.
  • Track physical inventory and conduct annual inventory surveys.
  • Arrange for surplus pickups.
  • Act as building coordinator in absence of facilities manager.
  • Act as floor warden during evacuations and drills.

    Facilities & Safety 25%
  • Follow-up with Facilities Services to ensure that work is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Coordinate facility shutdown and communicate information in a timely manner to the appropriate people.
  • Enforce laboratory safety compliance: Develop Manufacturing Shop orientation, create safety training materials for super users.
  • Ensure compliance of new shared departmental labs with evolving EH&S (Environmental Health and Safety) lab safety standards.
  • Create and maintain the User Policies manual: compliance with recharge center and evolving EH&S safety policies.
  • Keep up-to-date instructional videos for existing and new lab experiments.
  • Manage work orders with UW Facility Services for space modification & maintenance.
  • Assist research groups with waste disposal as needed.
  • In concert with the A&A Safety Committee, implement and enforce safety procedures and accident prevention programs for A&A facilities and personnel.
  • As new grants are funded, consult with faculty to anticipate safety needs (i.e., storage for flammables, personal protective equipment) before lab supplies or equipment is ordered.
  • Identify EH&S safety classes that should be attended by lab personnel; verify attendance for new students, staff, and faculty as they join the shop.
  • Ensure that the Laboratory Personal Protective Equipment Hazard Assessment is in place for each lab and that lab personnel have copies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Equipment 15%
  • Perform monthly testing of all lab equipment to ensure that they are functioning properly.
  • Ensure that all equipment for research and instruction are tagged with a UW Property sticker and entered into the UW’s inventory system.
  • Perform the annual physical equipment inventory for the department.
  • Responsible for regular disposal of surplus property.

    Process improvement and Research Design Consultation 10%
  • Serve as a first point of contact in collaboration with the facilities manager for students to identify resources within the department to complete their course and extracurricular (RSO’s) projects.
  • Partner with classroom instructors to identify and support departmental facility resources to support academic labs, this may include but is not limited to making recommendations about future purchases, providing procedures and/or training to students, providing feedback on the feasibility of student requests and collaborating with the facilities manager to onboard new faculty to resources available to support their courses.
  • Participate in project teams which may include the facilities manager, research manager, administrator, and others within the department or external to the department to update and streamline the facilities resources available to students to complete their coursework and/or enhance their extracurricular activities.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    A Bachelor's Degree with major study in a basic applied science AND two years of full-time experience as a Scientific Instructional Technician or equivalent OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited program in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Engineering Physics.
  • Knowledge of and hands on experience with additive manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of and hands on experience with CNC machining.
  • Experience with equipment maintenance.
  • Experience with and specific knowledge of composite manufacturing and/or mechanical testing.
