Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, teach transfer and developmental Mathematics courses, to include distance education. Assignments may include evening and weekend hours, and travel to off-campus sites to teach Early College classes at local high schools, including Hawaiian immersion schools, and at correctional facilities.
  • Perform related work, including, but not limited to, developing teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate quantitative/logical thinking skills into course content; 3) develop and assess the competencies and skills for the course student learning outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and 5) teach courses utilizing a variety of delivery systems (e.g., face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or other distance delivery formats) as needed and appropriate.
  • Prepare and revise course outlines; develop curriculum, to include integration of culture-based and/or workforce-relevant course content and methodology in mathematics classes; develop alternate delivery systems for courses where appropriate; update and assess Student Learning Outcomes; and develop appropriate assessment instruments.
  • Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees, community service, in-service training and assessment activities; and advise students.
  • Must be able to independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and noninstructional assignments.
  • Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development.
  • Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include collecting data, preparing reports, and teaching community service and in-service training courses and provide assistance as a math resource instructor in the Math Lab as needed.
Minimum Qualification
  • (a) Master's degree in Mathematics (MA or MS in Mathematics); or
  • (b) Master's in Mathematics Education with 18 credits of advanced coursework in math of which 9 credits are at the graduate level; or
  • (c) Master's of Art in Teaching Math with 18 credits of advanced coursework in math, at least 9 of which are at the graduate level; or
  • (d) Master's in STEM-related field (i.e., Applied Math, Engineering, Physical Science, or Biological Science) with 18 credits of advanced coursework in math.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Successful teaching experience at the community college level in development and transfer level mathematics courses as substantiated by both student and peer assessments.
  • Experience teaching early college courses.
  • Experience teaching corequisite math courses.
  • Ability to incorporate Native Hawaiian concepts, culturally relevant paradigms, and/or Hawaiian language into curriculum.
  • Experience teaching mathematics classes that target students in career and technical education programs.
  • Experience integrating current technology into the mathematics curriculum.
  • Experience as a resource instructor in a learning lab environment.
  • Experience and commitment to community involvement and service
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional self-development.
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum development including online and/or hybrid instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
  • Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the community college philosophy.
  • Experience conducting course level assessment of student learning outcomes, and analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.
