The Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia seeks a Senior Laboratory Specialist position in the laboratory of Dr. Jianguo Tao, MD. We are looking for talented and self-motivated individuals who are interested in joining a growing team focused on understanding the Lab Specialist Senior employees apply highly-developed subject matter expertise to laboratory research. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist Intermediate employees in the complexity of their work and their responsibilities for staff management. They assist in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of a scientific research lab. Lab Specialist Senior employees assist Principal Investigators or Lab Managers by performing the following tasks: designing research methodologies, managing research projects, developing and administering budgets and schedules, following established quality standards, and analyzing data and performance metrics. They ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. They employees may manage staff. They may co-author publications and co-present results with Principal Investigators.

Qualified applicants must have either :

• A Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Molecular biology and at least 5 years of experience working in a research environment.

• Candidates with a PhD, MD or MD/PhD, will be preferred. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise other lab personnel including students.

Candidates should be capable of designing and carrying out high level, complex research experiments while functioning independently under the general direction of the principal investigator. Candidates should also be comfortable being responsible for oversight of the lab. Strong writing and communication skills; and a willingness to collaborate and oversee graduate and undergraduate students are preferred.
