Job description
Position Purpose
To provide specific care to laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with clearly defined direction and established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals in the conduct of biomedical research and to provide support for the research investigations.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalency.
- At least one year of relevant animal care experience.
- Ability to apply procedures for the care and handling of laboratory animals.
- Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting and carrying equipment or feed packages weighing up to 50lbs.
- Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to instruct and mentor other technicians.
- Compliance and training experience preferred.
- Successful completion of the AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification preferred.

Animal Care
- Handles and cares for a variety of animals on a daily basis.
- Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.
- Reports changes in animal condition to the veterinary staff.
- Communicates with the principal investigators and their technical staff concerning the status of their research animals.
Laboratory II and III
- May administer medications under the direction of a CCMR veterinarian.
- Euthanizes animals as needed.
- Performs routine procedures such as nail clipping, teeth clipping, blood collection, etc. on all common laboratory animals without injuring the animals or endangering themselves or others.
- Achieves competence in caring for and handling a variety of animal species housed in the Center for Comparative Medicine and Research.
Facility/Habitat Maintenance
- Cleans cages, utilizing washers other mechanical equipment.
- Prepares and maintains caging and equipment for animal care.
- Maintains the sanitary condition of the animals and their environment.
- Prepares chemicals as needed including mixing appropriate dilutions for different situations.
- Decontaminates areas as needed.
- Performs light maintenance of the facilities such as replacement of bulbs, preventative maintenance of washers, emptying wastebaskets, and floor cleaning.
- Performs regular filter changes to keep the bedding disposal station working properly.
- Maintains equipment maintenance logs.
- Washes scrubs and other laundry.
- Follows the appropriate traffic pattern to minimize transmission of microorganisms of concern in the facilities.
- Follows appropriate procedures to dispose of animal carcasses on an as needed basis. This includes performing procedures to save identified carcasses.
- Monitors and stocks various supplies within the facilities.
- Follows all SOP’s related to all areas of responsibility.
Environmental Control
- Observes and records the condition of an animal’s environment, including temperature, air exchange, and light cycle.
- Applies an understanding of the problem(s) created in an animal population by lack of any or all of the environmental factors.
- Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to reduce noise exposure, or exposure to allergens as necessary.
Research Support – Laboratory II and III only
- May provide general technical assistance in support of the research team.
- Maintains rodent breeding colonies to include setting up breeding pairs, weaning, and record keeping.
- Administers medications to laboratory animals under the direction of the veterinarian.
- May perform routine technical laboratory procedures and assists with surgical procedures.
Administrative
- Maintains proper medical records and inventory records on individual animals.
- Maintains necessary documentation such as, payroll time sheets, departmental time logs, animal husbandry logs, clinical incident forms, and room supply inventory need sheets.
- Monitors inventories of consumable supplies ensuring appropriate rotation and inventory of non-consumable equipment.

- Demonstrates behaviors consistent with the agreed upon team expectations of CCMR leadership and staff.
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively with all members of a diverse community. Fosters inclusiveness and diversity.
