SITUATION IN ORGANIZATION:
Reports to the HESQ Manager.
JOB DIMENSIONS:
- Responsible for complying with all AIMS, HESQ policies & practices including ISO-9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and RCMS. This includes compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. For example, OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, etc.
- Promote safety by following and requiring personnel to follow OSHA and company standards to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Provide analytical results for quality and environmental compliance.
- Maintain inventory and supplies within the laboratory’s designated budget.
- Provide reliable and accurate analytical results to production department to enable them to make adjustments within the process based on the results. Instrumentation is required to be functional and accurate for analytical results to be generated.
- Provide reliable and accurate analytical results to logistics on raw materials and products to allow them to accept or reject shipments of raw materials or ship products.
- Ensure lab housekeeping is maintained daily to include removal of wastes, proper chemical storage, and elimination of clutter.
KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
GENERAL LAB OPERATIONS 40%:
- Calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
- Responsible for the operation of all laboratory equipment.
- Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment.
- Program and maintain software applications specific to instruments and data application.
- Review, revise, and develop standard lab procedures for analyses.
QUALITY CONTROL 30%:
- Responsible for all laboratory operations and analysis.
- Ensure the analyses used to generate data are precise and accurate by using ASTM standards when applicable or when applicable develop unique methodologies by using sound chemistry/analytical knowledge and acceptable laboratory techniques.
- Develop and maintain SQC charts, spreadsheets, and analytical results.
- Provide analytical data to various departments within the plant, to corporate personnel and to external customer as warranted so that each of these entities can make accurate decisions.
- Compile analyses and produce statistical data for customer or plant specification changes.
- ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certified.
- Participate on the Internal Audit Team and in internal audits to ensure compliance & effectiveness.
LAB PROCESSES & PROCEDURES 20%:
- Effectively maintain and establish improved methodologies for wet chemistry, gas chromatography and other analytical instruments.
- Ensure all potable and wastewater samples are collected and properly processed.
- Promote safe operations of lab analyses and by following OSHA and Arkema standards and using SDSs.
- Understand and keep current with all laboratory safety and reporting techniques.
- Ensure that shipments released are on specification.
- Inform, educate, and train personnel on new or recent changes to procedures concerning lab procedures, policies, and changes in analytical methods.
PROJECTS: 10%:
- Manage, plan, and implement special projects as required.
Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.
CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT:
- Perform duties following ISO 9001 standards. Follow EPA and TCEQ requirements and guidelines. Follow ASTM guidelines as applicable and acceptable laboratory techniques and practices. Follow OSHA regulations and guidelines concerning laboratory practices and general plant safety. Follow the company’s Code of Conduct policy.
- This position requires a dependable and reliable individual, whose daily presence adds to the success of the Department. This job may also require 5% business related travel during the year.
- Supports the site HESQ policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
- Participates in HESQ activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
- Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident, or injury incidents.
- Work with KOP personnel as it relates to the lab and analysis.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE:
This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, with emphasis in chemistry or other related field. In lieu of a degree, 5 years of work in a chemical production plant lab, working with such equipment as titrators, distillation columns, GCs, pH meters, etc., may be accepted. Candidates with prior experience in the chemistry field, especially Gas Chromatography, titration, distillation, and liquid chromatography experience will be considered first. Position includes extended hours and can be called back to the laboratory during off hours or weekends, due to emergency situations. This position requires strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and advanced computer networking and software skills. DEMONSTRATED COMPETENCIES:
Has oversight of the Houston Plant’s analytical instrumentation including tracking the condition of the instrument, developing, and implementing the preventative maintenance of the instrument, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing the instrument. Maintain and conduct statistical analysis of analytical data for customers or in plant entities. Develop and/or implement new procedures for analyses. Participate in the maintenance of the quality management system.
