The Arizona Cotton Research and Protection Council (ACRPC) invites applicants for a Laboratory Technician position to support methods development of insect mass-rearing technology at the Phoenix Rearing Facility (PRF). Under the supervision of the Lab Manager, this position assists in the development of rearing best practices for navel orangeworm by performing various technical duties in laboratory and field settings.

Job Duties:
  • Runs experiments using live insect specimens and record data and observations accurately.
  • Performs tedious tasks that require attention to detail, including but not limited to counting insect eggs under a microscope, counting adult insects in a variety of environments, sorting insects by sex, screening samples of insects for deformities, and more.
  • Enters and verifies data into databases accurately and efficiently.
  • Operates and performs basic maintenance on lab equipment such as microscopes, scales, pipettes, stir plates, etc.
  • Cultures insect pathogens using an aseptic technique.
  • Learns new skills and procedures for experiments as required through oral and/or written instructions.
  • Assists in the training of other personnel.
  • Assists as needed production staff with the day-to-day operation of the PRF.

Selective Preference(s):
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a biological or life science that included laboratory coursework in the basic sciences appropriate to the assignment. 1 to 2 years of relevant laboratory experience in an appropriate field.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees.
  • Successfully pass background and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency's ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
  • State travel is required for State business. Employees who drive on state business must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-I0-207.12.) AND having an acceptable driving record for the last 39 months is required including no DUI, suspensions, or revocations and less than 8 points on your license. A copy of your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) is required at the time of your interview if an Out of State Driver's License was held within the last 39 months.
