Lands Timber Measurement Specialist (scaling)
Job description
This position is a permanent, benefitted .83 FTE position working at least 1,726 hours a year. This position is primarily full-time (40 hours/week) the majority of the year, however, fewer hours may be worked during breakup (approximately March-April) and other slow times.

Minimum Pay rate is 17.17. Final pay rate is based on experience and qualifications.
The Lands Timber Measurement Specialist position is used for recruitment and training purposes for the Lands Timber Measurement Specialist, Senior position. Through various types of on-the-job training, the employee will learn to carry out the duties of a Lands Timber Measurement Specialist, Senior. Typically, the Senior level requires one to three (1-3) years of experience as a Lands Timber Measurement Specialist or equivalent work experience. A Timber Measurement Specialist is expected to apply his/her technical knowledge and training while learning the state laws, department policies and procedures necessary to achieve the expertise and independence of the journeyman level Lands Timber Measurement Specialist, Senior. - Determines proper log scaling procedures for log load deliveries from each timber sale.
- Determines species, classification, defect, and gross and net scale in both Scribner and/or cubic scale for logs cut from state lands.
- Performs log scaling as per the terms of each logging contract. Reports any discrepancies to the forester-in-charge of each sale.
- Monitors truck loads to ensure proper compliance with log accountability terms of the timber sale contract.
- Monitors log manufacture to ensure compliance with the utilization terms of the timber sale contract.
- Monitors electronic sampling and weighing systems at equipped log yards.
- Identifies and determines log defects.
- Uses a handheld data recorder to compute and record gross and net log scale.
- Tracks the correct usage of load tickets for each sale being delivered to assigned scale locations.
- Compiles and computes daily load tallies.
- Travels to each assigned mill location daily as required to complete log scaling and load accountability.
- Serves as the initial IDL representative at mill and log yard locations to communicate with company scalers, truck drivers, equipment operators, foresters, yard foremen, mill managers, and owners to identify and resolve scaling problems, load ticket accountability issues, or log utilization concerns.
- Works with Timber Measurement Supervisor to monitor mill markets and products produced. Assists with the communication of this information to the Timber Measurement Supervisor and to IDL foresters. .
- Use handheld data recorder to transfer data to personal computer and provides. training and basic repair for handhelds within assigned operation area.
- Use computer to collect and send field data.
These qualifications are mandatory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Obtain and maintain a valid Log Scalers license for all species and products issued by the Idaho Board of Scaling Practices within 12 months of employment.- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to operate a handheld electronic recording device.

Incumbents must be physically able to maneuver rough terrain, work in extreme weather conditions, and lift and carry supplies and equipment.
Travel Requirements: 40%+ travel throughout the state of Idaho and adjacent states.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the first level of a three level structure. At this level, incumbents receive on- the-job training while serving as an underfill for the Lands Timber Measurement Specialist, Senior. Typically, the Senior level requires 2-5 years of experience as a Timber Measurement Specialist or equivalent work experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Record keeping.
- Forest Management Activities such as operation of logging equipment, free marking, thinning, timber sale layout, timber cruising, timber falling, etc.•
- Experience using handheld electronic recording device
- Basic computer skills for data entry
- Experience with scaling the following species: Cedar, White Pine, Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Spruce, Hemlock, Larch, and Lodgepole Pine
- Experience with determining proper scaling methods and gross and net scale for logs using both Scribner and cubic rules
- Experience with forest management activities such as operation of logging equipment, tree marking, thinning, timber sale layout, timber cruising, timber falling, etc.
- Experience with property security and accountability exercises.
