Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) is a Westchester-based cultural non-profit that welcomes visitors to five National Historic Landmarks, including Philipsburg Manor, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, and Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate. HHV seeks a candidate with seasoned landscaping skills to join the Buildings, Grounds & Security Department.

Primary Responsibility:
To provide hands-on assistance to the Buildings, Grounds & Security Department. Reporting to the Landscape Manager, and through collaboration with other departmental staff, the Landscaper is responsible for maintaining historic landscapes across Historic Hudson Valley’s Westchester County sites and Headquarters. The Landscaper will be responsible for year-round and seasonally dependent maintenance (i.e., spring planting, fall leaf clean up, winter snow removal, etc.)

Principal Duties:
  • Care for Living Collection – Water new and existing plantings and maintain trees, shrubs beds, and herbaceous plantings in a horticulturally and ecologically responsible manner
  • Main sites through trash, litter, and debris clean-up
  • Lawn Maintenance through use of various equipment for mowing, line trimming, edging, seasonal applications of lawn care products
  • Snow Removal using various equipment for snow plowing, snow blowing, hand shoveling, and applying ice melt
  • Maintain Equipment (Power Equipment) using proper care for equipment and machinery through routine maintenance, including cleaning and storage after each use
  • Maintain non-mechanical hand tools. Perform basic repairs, as necessary
  • Assist with special event set up, break down, and staffing. Requires select nights and weekends September – November.
  • Supervise and monitor seasonal and summer grounds help

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Demonstrate ability in landscape maintenance. Preferred education in Plant Science or relevant work experience
  • Knowledge and skills of landscape and garden equipment use and repair
  • Ecological awareness (environmentally conscious landscape practices)
  • Ornamental, native and invasive plant identification
  • Knowledge of gardening techniques
  • Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Able to work alone or with a team
  • Physically fit, able to lift 50 lbs
  • Valid drivers’ license
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office
Work Conditions:
  • Exposure to varied weather conditions
  • Working with a wide variety of landscaping equipment and landscape chemicals
  • Extended periods of walking, lifting, standing, bending and stooping
  • Travelling to other HHV locations
  • Maintaining a clean and safe workspace. Use all equipment in a safe, professional manner ensuring both personal and public safety. Correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and situational awareness is required when using power tools or operating machinery (PPE will be provided)
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday hours. Required to work select nights and weekends September – November.
  • Must be available for potential weekend weather related snow or storm management
