POSITION: Lead Ophthalmic Technician
DEPARTMENT: FMC Eye Specialists
JOB SUMMARY: Lead Ophthalmic technician or assistant for general ophthalmologist and Retina provider.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High School diploma, some college preferred.
2. Three to five years experience as an ophthalmic technician.
3. Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic technician.
4. Valid CPR certification.

6. Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work-ups on 3.5 patients per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication & Patient Care
a. Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
b. Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
c. Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:
· Visual acuity
· Manual lensometry
· Confrontational visual fields
· Stereo testing
· Evaluation of motility
· Pupillary function tests
· Color plates
· Applanation tonometry
· Advanced refractometry
· Retinoscopy
· Angle assessment
· Dilation of pupils
· Contact lens evaluations
· Visual field testing
· Optic nerve scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, GDx)
· Pachymetry
· Corneal topography
· A Scan and B Scan
· Ophthalmic imaging, including fluorescein angiography
· Other tasks specific to the physician needs as a result of new technologies
d. Performs duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe.
e. Assists physician with laser procedures.
f. Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
2. Triage
a. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advises as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during wait.
b. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
c. Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care questions.
d. Communicates with reception and lead ophthalmic technician to facilitate proper patient flow.
3. Instrument Maintenance
a. Troubleshoots instruments as necessary.
b. Replaces bulbs.
c. Checks connections.
d. Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.
e. Reports to supervisor and physician.
4. Administrative
a. Audits clinical supply levels, communicating to lead ophthalmic technician which items fall below par level.
b. Performs other duties as required and maintain role of the Ophthalmic Technician Leader.
c. Attend monthly director/physician meeting
d. Organize and conduct monthly staff meetings
e. Participate in new employee interviews
f. Clinic maintenance activities: Maintain inventory levels and order supplies
g. Maintain team morale: Ensure smooth office operations with support teamwork. Generate a positive attitude between front office and back. Assist management with handling workplace interpersonal issues.
h. Scheduling:
Monthly calendar (coordination with doctor schedules ie. Vacation and surgery time out of office.)
Track individual physician technician usage on a half-day basis
Manage and limit overtime hours
Assure a.m. and p.m. clinics start on tim e
Establish and maintain attendance policy/incentives: review leave requests
5. Training new staff and maintain training documents
6. Quality Assurance
a .Monitor productivity
b. Assist in the design, implementation and modification of technician workflow
c. Continuing Education
