Senior Counsel

The North America Legal team for Novelis Corporation is seeking a candidate for a Senior Counsel position at its headquarters in Atlanta, GA. The Senior Counsel role is a cross-functional position that provides strategic legal advice, counsel and services to (i) the Global Capital Projects and Regional NA Corporate and Plant Procurement Teams in support of Novelis North America’s capital projects, including a new rolling mill in Bay Minette, AL and casting and recycling facility in Guthrie, KY, as well as other planned investments in New York, and Kentucky; (ii) the Specialties Building and Construction Business, (iii) the Logistics and Transportation Teams, and (iv) various functional leaders, to support corporate CAPEX and plant procurement, commercial and operational functions to ensure that the Company’s legal needs and business interests are protected in furtherance of achieving the Company’s strategic growth goals and objectives.

The primary focus of the position is to partner with North America Legal team and the North America business to handle commercial transactions and business contract arrangements with suppliers and customers, including the analysis, negotiation, review, drafting and implementation of key supply arrangements for a variety of large North American capital projects, and with various business functions, including Procurement, Logistics and Transportation, and key sales arrangements with Commercial, and provide direct support to certain Novelis Inc. global functions, including IT. This diverse role also involves the management and resolution of contractual issues and commercial disputes, and the handling of an assortment other legal matters to anticipate and address legal issues and ensure that Novelis’ risks and liabilities are minimized while promoting business interests. The position would also support training employees on legal and corporate compliance matters and special project management.

  • Strategic and practical legal advice and counseling to the Global Capital Projects and Regional NA Corporate and Plant Procurement Teams, the Specialties Building and Construction Business, the Logistics and Transportation Teams, and various functional leaders, to support all North America corporate and operational functions to ensure that the Regional legal needs and business interests and objectives are protected.
  • Handling strategic commercial and business contract arrangements with suppliers and customers, including the planning, structuring, analysis, negotiation, review, drafting and implementation of strategic commercial arrangements across the Specialties Building and Construction Value Stream and functions.
  • Legal counsel, perspective planning advice, leadership and commercial guidance in support of Novelis North America commercial initiatives, and support to corporate global functions, as vital, consistent with the Company’s contracts management policies and procedures, and providing training and compliance initiatives.
  • Supervising and implementing general risk management and litigation avoidance strategies, while staying on top of legal and regulatory changes to optimally communicate issues and solutions across all levels of the business organization.
  • Delivering strategic mentorship, counsel, advice and assistance on a variety of sophisticated commercial transactions and arrangements, and cross-functional support in multiple areas applying diverse legal skills.
  • Implementing general risk management and avoidance strategies and influencing business managers to acquire methodologies as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree from accredited U.S. law school
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience as in-house counsel or with law firm
  • Excellent contract negotiation and drafting skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to use independent judgment and creativity to resolve intricate contract issues
  • Significant experience negotiating intricate contracts, and resolving elaborate commercial disputes, is highly valued, as is experience counseling global organizations on procurement and commercial issues
  • Diligent and ability to work accurately under pressure and prioritize transactions and projects simultaneously under deadline pressure in a high-performance environment
  • Ability to follow up on assignments in a timely manner and exercise good business judgment
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, strong leadership skills, the ability to build and sustain lasting relationships with suppliers, customers, and management, and build consensus across an international matrix organization
  • Shown ability to think strategically, independently identify issues, analyze problems, and provide viable solutions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact optimally with all levels of personnel and management, including senior executives.
