The Coalition is a 501(C)3 Non-Profit Organization, and we aim to improve the quality of life and create hope for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our ultimate goal is to provide victims with alternative ways of coping with physical and/or emotional abuse through education, counseling, shelter, non-judgmental emotional support, and housing assistance.

Summary of Position

The LGBTQ+ Mobile Advocate provides direct services and trauma-informed advocacy to LGBTQ+ people experiencing bullying, hate crimes, discrimination, stalking, and sexual assault or intimate partner violence in Ventura County. Services include in-person crisis intervention, victim advocacy, and supporting victims of sexual assault on our 24/7 Rape Crisis Calendar. LGBTQ+ Mobile Advocate collaborates with our LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator to support cultural sensitivity training and outreach for our community partners. This position fulfills Coalition for Family Harmony’s mission of educating communities on the impact of violence on LGBTQ+ people.

Fundamental Job Requirements

● Provide in-person advocacy and appropriate service referrals to victims of bullying, hate crimes, discrimination, stalking, and sexual assault or intimate partner violence in Ventura County.

● Hold office hours at our Family Justice Center to network with District Attorney Advocates and our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

● Provide support with restraining orders, filing police reports, applying for Victims of Crime Compensation, warm transfers to other services, or transportation to criminal justice offices.

● Develop educational materials (brochures, pamphlets, etc.), including social media content on victim rights, restraining orders, Victims of Crime Compensation, etc., for LGBTQ+ communities.

● Collaborate with our LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator to develop new training on better practices in working with LGBTQ+ survivors for community partners such as, but not limited to, law enforcement, the Family Justice Center, SART, and Domestic Violence Agencies.

● Support outreach requests from our community partners to share our services, which may include attending resource fairs or delivering presentations.

● Participate in outreach and event planning that supports LGBTQ+ communities such as Pride, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Clothesline Project, Suicide Awareness, etc.

● Organize monthly check-ins within our agency programs, our local LGBTQ+ Community Center, the LGBT+ Aging Coalition, and the Ventura County Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion to support community partners working with LGBTQ+ communities.

● Participate in the 24-7 Rape Crisis Calendar for accompaniments to forensic exams, interviews, and advocacy support, and incorporate affirming practices for LGBTQ+ survivors of violence.

o Must respond to calendar calls within ONE hour of receiving a call for accompaniment in Ventura County. Training will be provided.

● Capture and upload program statistics and information to our database to complete state reports.

● Performs other duties as assigned by Rape Crisis/LGBTQ+ Program Manager.

Educational Requirements

● Bachelor’s Degree in gender studies, psychology, sociology, social services, or another applicable field preferred. Experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.

Schedule

● The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 8 am – 5 pm. However, this position adapts to community requests for training. Occasional weekends and after-hours may apply. This position is eligible for overtime benefits.

Certifications

● Must obtain Domestic Violence Counselor certification that meets the requirements under California Evidence Code 1037.1 within one year of hire date.

● Must obtain Sexual Assault Counselor certification that meets the requirements under California Evidence Code 1305.2 within one year of hire date.

● Must attend our LGBTQ+ 101 Training within six months of hire date

Knowledge Base/Skills

● Strong public speaking skills are a requirement.

● Demonstrated experience working with LGBTQ+ communities and cultural sensitivity practices.

● Ability to create materials and content relatable to college and high school youth.

● Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).

● Basic marketing design to create brochures and fact sheets, etc.

● Ability to provide basic troubleshooting for a variety of technology, including televisions, CD/DVD’s, laptops, desktop computers, projectors and general office equipment is required.

● Research and stay abreast of current social media, articles, and blogs on issues about violence affecting LGBTQ+ communities.

● Regularly expanding knowledge base on intersectionality, gendered violence, impacts of domestic and sexual assault on the community, working with survivors of violence, and more by reading literature, social media, blog and news posts, etc., is expected.

OTHER INFORMATION

● Must pass extensive background check

● Requires reliable transportation. Modes of transportation expected for this position are by car. A valid class C driver license and proof of car insurance required.

● Eligible for mileage reimbursement when driving personal vehicle.

● The option to telecommute (or to perform essential job duties at home) is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Manager and, if necessary, by others on the Leadership Team.

● Ability to speak English fluently is a requirement. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

● Must be able to pull a rolling outreach cart (up to 20 lbs) to events and set up a canopy, if needed. CFH may accommodate physical requirements upon request (stand, sit, stoop, bend, and lift/move up to 20 lbs)

● COVID19 vaccination, including a booster dose for eligible individuals, is required.
