GENERAL SUMMARY: The ideal candidate is responsible for creating an interesting and vibrant collection of materials. Provide superior customer service to all library visitors, and actively promote the values and virtues of a library; create a library collection that is reflective of the community and cognizant of library trends, including various multi-media (including audio, digital, print, web-based resources, and social-media); provide advice and assistance to patrons related to reference-related questions, along with other general library question; creating and promoting library programs and events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: * Proactively develops contacts in the community as a means of locating materials and promoting partnership opportunities * Prepares and presents oral and written communications, reports and other materials * Maintains an awareness of current events, developments, and trends through reading professional literature, other news media, and participation in professional associations * Uses broad and comprehensive knowledge of current library theories and practices to assist patrons, obtains information and makes effective use of the library resources and services; researches and answers reference-related questions; selects titles of interest in subject areas indicated by patrons; makes extended use of resources in a variety of formats, performs bibliographic searches * Actively researches and sources grant funding opportunities, prepares grant application for funding for operational and improvement programs * Perform other duties related to the operation of the department * Develop and deliver strategically and pedagogically appropriate library instruction to students and works with teaching faculty to implement information literacy initiatives * Plans and implements a program of instruction that teaches students the effective use of library and other instructional media resources * Evaluates, selects and maintains a library collection that attempts to be well balanced, supports the established curricula and provides recreational material * Selects, orders, catalogs and processes all types of library media to provide for easy access and retrieval * Maintains a behavioral climate in the library conducive to learning, and works with other staff in attempting to resolve problems of student behavior * Works closely with other staff members so that the library may be of maximum service to the instruction program * Serves, as requested, as a resource person on school committees concerned with curriculum development and accreditation * Identifies and attempts to meet special needs of students and initiates referrals to special programs and services personnel as necessary * Exercises supervision and care over furniture, books, supplies, and equipment entrusted to the librarian’s care, and instructs students in the proper use and preservation of school properties * Prepares and completes such forms, records, ad reports as may be called for in the management of the schools * Maintains effective relationships between Fortune School of Education and public libraries * Attends meetings called by the Dean, department chairpersons, or other administrator authorized to call meetings * Attends and participates in required in-service training activities and works with the Dean in planning the librarian’s own professional improvement * Provides individual reference assistance to faculty and students * Provides as need indicates supplementary reading list and bibliographies of a variety of media that is correlated with the established curricula * Works cooperatively with supervisors in planning and implementing the educational programs of the schools * Promotes library materials and databases Qualifications Required knowledge, skills and abilities: * Experience with assessment of library services * Knowledge of books, authors, bibliographies and reference materials; publishing and resources * Principles, practices and standards of professional library science including reference services, professional technical services, collection development, circulation practices, theory and application of library automation, and technological applications in libraries * Principles and practices of library organization, operations, and procedures * Computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions * Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing * Demonstrated oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills * Commitment and ability to advocate for and cultivate an environment that support diversity, respect, and inclusion * Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, and manage time and projects * Demonstrated understanding of the role of the academic library in the learning and research process * Familiarity with current trends, technologies, and best practices in library and information * Demonstrated interest and/or engagement in information literacy and instructional design * Knowledge of or experience with reference and/or research consultations * Under general supervision, perform a variety of professional librarian duties of moderate to complex difficulty including providing information and assistance to customers; perform reference and reader advisory services; perform collection development within assigned area * Assimilate and adjust to procedures unique to this library * Demonstrate initiative, teamwork and creative problem solving skills * Greet patrons in a friendly and accessible manner * Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work Education and Experience * Masters of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university * Two years or more of experience as a professional librarian Working Conditions * Hearing and speaking to conduct group training, exchange information in person electronically and over the telephone * Ability to read printed material and computer screens. Ability to understand speech at normal levels * Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment * Kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies * Ability to climb stairs, bend, reach, walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time * Ability to lift and carry 10 pounds * Accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions * The ability to work some evening and weekend assignments as needed*
