Job description
The Burgundy library functions as the curricular center of the school and is staffed by one full-time and one part-time librarian, aided by parent volunteers. It contains over 18,000 items, including books, videos, and online databases, and has a monthly circulation in excess of 2,000 items.
Library and technology services are integrated at Burgundy. The library and technology center is centrally located in one building, which is a hub for teaching and learning at Burgundy. Classes come to the library once a week on a fixed schedule in Junior Kindergarten-3rd grade. In grades 4-5, students have weekly checkout periods and flexibly scheduled periods for research work when needed. Middle school students have regularly scheduled checkout periods and the librarian supports the teachers with information literacy lessons when requested. Students and families are welcome to visit the library anytime during the school day to check out books. Both full-time and part-time librarians are responsible for teaching library classes to early childhood, elementary, and/or middle school students. Class and grade-level teaching responsibilities are divided and shared based on interest and prior experience.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating with teachers and technology staff to develop and implement an information literacy, research skills, and project-based curriculum
- Participation in annual summer curriculum work
- Collection development (especially as it relates to the librarian’s integral role in curriculum development)
- Staying current with new books, technology, and school library trends and issues
- Curating the collection to reflect best DEI practices
- Foster a love of reading through displays, readers’ advisory, website updates, and scheduling of author/illustrator visits
- Supervising and working with parent volunteers

The successful candidate should be a collaborative, creative, flexible, and energetic lifelong learner who values ongoing professional growth. Candidates should demonstrate a love of children’s literature, an interest in integrating technology, and enjoy working with both students and teachers. Applicants should possess excellent organizational skills, be attentive to detail, and ideally have prior experience working in a school library and teaching early childhood, elementary, or middle school students. Applicants with an MLS degree are preferred.
Hours
- Arrive by 8:00 a.m., depart after 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Wednesday, when faculty meetings begin at 2:45 p.m. and end at 4:00 or 5:00pm.
- The School is closed for most national holidays, as well as Winter and Spring Break.
Salary and Benefits
- Salaries are based on a competitive independent school scale with increases for advanced degrees and experience; a $2000 step increase for a Master’s Degree.
- Health, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability are offered to all full-time employees. The School will contribute to each full-time employee’s benefits, who work at a minimum 75%, via a cost share model.
- A Retirement plan with TIAA, with an initial 3% match and then 6% match by the school after two years, irrespective of employee contribution is offered to full-time employees.
- A tuition benefit (1/2 discount) is offered for one qualified child attending Burgundy to full-time employees only. (Fac-staff children are eligible for additional financial aid also.)
