The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection (DESPP) is recruiting a Maintainer (37.5 Hour) for the Connecticut State Police Training Academy in Meriden, Connecticut.

This position is full-time on second shift, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 10:30 AM until 6:00 PM.

Please Note: Snow and ice removal season is from November 1 to April 15 annually and mandatory. This requires being called in after hours and may require multiple days per event. As a Maintainer is an essential employee, attendance is required even if the state is closed by the Governor.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
As a Maintainer with DESPP, you will primarily be utilized to assist the kitchen staff performing a full range of tasks involved in preparing and cooking food. The position will also be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Providing food services;
  • Lawncare and general grounds keeping;
  • Performing building maintenance;
  • Conducting custodial tasks;
  • Other duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

  • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
  • Grounds care;
  • Food services;
  • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
  • Parking garage.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience on a food tray line meal delivery system;
  • Experience with sanitation practices in a food service environment;
  • Experience preparing and serving 500 – 800 complete meals per day in a food service environment;
  • Experience with bulk and individual plate cooking techniques;
  • Experience rotating workstations in a shift;
  • Experience with custodial duties including floor care, sanitizing, and trash removal;
  • Experience with building maintenance in office or dormitory settings;
  • Experience with snow removal operations utilizing snow shovels and snow blowers or vehicles with snowplows;
  • Experience with computers and smart devices to complete work order documentation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
