The Expeditionary Systems Engineering Division (ESED) is a component of Corona Division, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). ESED performs full spectrum life cycle engineering and test support to verify the safety, reliability, and effectiveness of Expeditionary Warfare systems. The primary function of ESED is to provide In-Service Engineering and Test and Evaluation for the Department of Defense (DoD). As part of this function, ESED conducts test operations at regional Southern California ranges such as Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and at multiple DoD ranges across the United States. This task sets forth the requirements for technical services related to testing to include test planning, test execution, test support, test operations and associated logistics. These services are in support of a wide variety of systems across their life cycle, which include ESED's main focus areas such as Arms, Ammunition, Explosives, Weapons Systems, and associated platforms utilized by the Expeditionary Warfare community. ESED’s secondary focus areas such as Sensors and Communications, Mobility Platforms, Systems Integration, and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment with unique military applications; and other new or existing systems that require independent testing for Expeditionary Warfare.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Maintenance Manager will produce machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine on the Test Operations Support Services (TOSS) contract. This position is located in Fallbrook, CA.
What You'll Do:
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Plans stock inventory by checking stock to determine amount available; anticipating needed stock; placing and expediting orders for stock; verifying receipt of stock.
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices.
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces; adhering to international standards.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Detailed knowledge of precision measuring equipment and the application of such instruments including but not limited to calipers, ID / OD micrometers, depth gauges, indicators.
  • Be able to weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse basic metal segments, using processes such as flux-cored arc, carbon arc.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
  • Performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts.
  • Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • Uses full range of precision measuring and gauging tools to perform inspection before start of job.
  • Analyzes mechanical and operational problems on assigned equipment and plans for and takes corrective action.
  • Makes necessary corrections and running adjustments to maintain maximum production and quality.
  • Performs repair, rebuilding or overhaul work of manufacturing or service equipment from blueprints, company manufacturing manuals, written or verbal instructions.
  • Develop and conduct training for operation of lathes, mills, sanders, and other various mechanical/pneumatic equipment to include all applicable OSHA, Federal, and State safety requirements.
  • Bid and proposal support if requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Required Qualifications:
  • An active secret clearance is required to be considered for this position.
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent two-year college or technical school in CNC programing, machine tool programing or 5 years’ experience in CNC programming.
  • Five (5) years of producing machined parts by programming (CAD/CAM software), setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine.
  • Experience with general welding.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work well in a design team and handle multiple designs.
  • Ability to display integrity and ethics in handling confidential information.
  • Able to manage complex schedules.
  • Must be able to frequently stand; walk; sit; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Travel Required ~10% travel required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with 3D Printing and design.
  • Certified Welder (CW): experienced welder with American Welding Society (AWS) AQC7 certification. Proficient in the Flux-Cord Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes.
  • At least five (5) or more years’ experience in drafting is desired.
  • Certified Welder (CW): experienced welder with American Welding Society (AWS) AQC7 certification. Proficient in the Flux-Cord Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) processes. QC7 Certified Welder with experience is a plus.
  • Possesses a degree or certificate from an accredited school in electrical technology, electronic technology engineering, or similar field.
  • Certified AutoCAD drafter.
  • Experience working with both AutoCAD and Solidworks
  • Aptitude for 3D printing and design.
  • Experience as an Instrument Mechanic.
  • Teaching background.
