Job description
At Maxar Space, our products are vast: from our WorldView Legion platform for earth observation, to the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) supporting NASA’s Artemis Program to return to the Moon, to our highly reliable 1300/Legion class platform for communications applications.
We are currently looking for a Manager of Avionics Engineering to join our team in Palo Alto, CA. In this role, you will report to the Avionics Subsystem Director and be responsible for leading an engineering team responsible for Avionics/Command and Data Handling subsystem design, analysis, hardware procurement, and testing. You and your team will work alongside a highly cross-functional team and will have the ability to impact all phases of spacecraft design and build: from working with Product Management and Mission Architecture teams to build out product roadmaps and develop new Avionics architectures for our various spacecraft platforms, to design implementations alongside Systems and Subsystem Engineering, to powering on the spacecraft and collecting data for the first time in AIT (and the troubleshooting fun that comes thereafter), and finally, to performing orbit raising activities as the fully built-up spacecraft is on its way to performing its mission.
You are technical in nature. You are business savvy. You can build teams and develop people.
Responsibilities
  • Lead your team: responsible for spacecraft subsystem Command and Data Handling (C&DH) and flight harnesses. This includes working cross-functionally to design C&DH subsystem architecture, wirelists, command & telemetry databases, and data buses. Furthermore, working alongside Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) to resolve on-the-floor anomalies and supporting spacecraft launch
  • Focus on your team: Mentor, train, develop, provide opportunities for you team members based on personal, professional and business needs
  • Ensure the highest quality: of all deliverables to stakeholders, like harness or unit manufacturing and other peer engineering groups like flight software.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment: within your team as well as cross-functionally across the organization
  • Be a partner: with Supply Chain to pro-actively manage procurements, with Business Development / Mission Architecture to develop new architectures, and with Systems Engineering and AIT to ensure clean hand-offs
  • Continuously improve: Tease out product and/or process inefficiencies and make it better
  • Own your portfolio cost models and budget: you proactively manage your budget, identify risks and opportunities to your work, and own your cost models to be used for new business proposals
  • Own your portfolio schedule: you proactively manage to your schedule, and work alongside your peers to ensure stakeholder needs are met
Who we are:
  • We are always curious – our history has proven our innovation, and this is the cornerstone of our success. We stay curious and continuously learn to improve our product, processes, and culture. When we find out that we did something wrong or there’s a better way to do it, we work to immediately fix it. You embody a growth mindset and help us further move the needle
  • We are highly collaborative and work better together – the work that we do is at the intersection of everything: Business Development, Product Management, other Subsystems, Systems Engineering, AIT, Supply Chain. We are all highly intertwined with one another and we only succeed if we move together as a whole. You thrive at these intersections and your success will be through these relationships. You’re also a storyteller and multi-technical-lingual, meaning that you’re able to distill the most important of information when speaking to others so they understand you
  • You matter – we are very serious about YOU and your development and will work closely with you to help craft your career objectives. Our tight-knit community provides many growth and learning opportunities ranging from working across organizations to multiple layers of management. We also expect that you provide this intense YOU focus to your team as well. You lead with empathy and concern for others’ physical and mental health, and focus on team member needs for inclusion, development, and growth
  • We are gritty: There is never a dull moment in our day…and that’s intended to be a good thing! We recognize situations when priorities shift and adjust to maintain perspective. We act as a role model in challenging situations. We manage our own emotions and believe in the capacity of all team members to learn and grow
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • A B.S. degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field. M.S. degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years in aerospace or related field working electronics or electrical systems or product development for high reliability, space-based systems or for critical systems in fields such as automotive, transportation, or medical devices
  • 3 years of experience in managing and/or leading engineering/product teams or projects.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills
Amazing to have
  • Prior Command and Data Handling Experience, including sound knowledge of related physical components and their relationships within various systems
  • Prior experience providing technical oversight to ensure electrical systems are compliant and verifiable at the avionics digital and analog telemetry level
  • Prior design experience with mixed-signal, high-speed digital, high performance embedded compute, FPGA development, and electromagnetic compatibility
  • Understanding of space environment as it relates to radiation tolerance/hardness, thermal stress and typical analyses techniques including simulation and modeling
  • Experience supporting new business development/proposals, including estimating rough order of magnitude costs and schedules
