Position Summary:

Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose and/or numerical control machines and machining centers such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines and grinders to fabricate metal parts according to specifications tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods. Studies blue prints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions, and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operation and sets up all tooling and specified requirements.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points on material on workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments accessories and materials on machines such as mill, lathes, jig borers, grinders and sharpeners.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out tolerance machining and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment.
  • Complete first piece inspection to insure quality of parts.
  • Selects, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, or tool post). Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps or wrenches.
  • Moves controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other and sets specified feeds, speeds, and depth of cut.
  • Sets up fixture or feeding device, starts machine and turns hand wheel to feed tool or workpiece or vice versa, and engages feed.
  • Turns valve handle to direct flow of coolant or cutting oil against tool and workpiece.
  • Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machine workpiece to specifications using measuring instruments.
  • Trains other employees as needed/instructed.
  • Prioritizes work orders.
  • May be required to perform other assigned duties.

  • Knowledge and ability to apply shop mathematics; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
  • Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures.
  • Knowledge of machine-ability, materials and layout techniques.
  • Ability to use fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers.
  • Knowledge and ability to set and program all machine shop machines.
  • Ability to read safety rules; instructions in the use of maintenance of shop tools and equipment; methods and procedures in mechanical drawings and layout work.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Over four and one-half years of experience as a machine operator required.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift, push or pull 35 pounds alone and > 35 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand entire shift, bending, reaching, and climbing as required by tasks being completed.
  • Ability to wear appropriate EEP, including hearing / eye protection, gloves and safety shoes.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed to complete job assignments.
  • Must be able to work in a non-climate controlled manufacturing plant environment.
