Position Overview
Performs activities of workers engaged in the construction, installation, and repair of wood or other type materials in ships, vessels, or in shipyard facilities.
Job Details
- Located in Port Angeles, WA
- $24-$28/hour
General Duties
- Refers to blueprints, work orders, specifications or oral instruction for specifications of work to be done
- Uses industry and trade best practices and accepted, proper fabrication of components and proper methods for interior and exterior work
- Selects, forms, fits, installs materials and structural units (hull, bulkheads, cabinetry), such as lumber or prefabricated items of metal, wood, or plastic, to be utilized on work to be performed
- Selects the specified type of material to be used and prepares a layout using rule, square, or whatever tool necessary
- Builds molds for further fiberglass parts fabrication
- Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, or marking instrument
- Shapes materials to the prescribed measurements
- Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together using nails, screws, dowel pins, and glue
- Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring
- Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions
- Installs insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors
- Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, windows, door frames, doors, interior and exterior panels and trim, weather stripping, and all other finish hardware, such as locks, hinges, knobs, and vents and assorted hardware (both removal and reinstallation)
- Builds, repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, tables, and all other components associated with the finish work on vessels, using hand tools and power tools
- Performs incidental tasks such as transporting tools, materials, and supplies. May use overhead cranes
- Is responsible for the adherence to company safety rules and regulations, along with all other policies and procedures, by his or her workers, and to direct workers to the proper methods of performing work in a safe and responsible manner
- Is responsible for the adherence to all such company rules, policies, and procedures
Working Conditions
Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday, including weekends and holidays as required. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at heights greater than six feet, and working in confined spaces. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.
Physical Requirements
Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater that negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
Qualifications/Essential Knowledge
The marine joiner carpenter foreman must:
- Be able to read alphabetically and numerically.
- Recommended have vocational education, high school, commercial or shop training, or technical school; in-house training organized study provided by the employer; or on-the-job training related to working with wood, fiberglass, metals, insulation.
- Be familiar with installing interior ship, including joiner bulkhead panels, track for panels, ceilings, galley equipment, bunks, lockers, tables and any ship furnishings.
- 2 years’ experience in a shipyard or the marine joinery/carpentry field preferred
