Salary Range:

  • Hiring salary is anticipated at $6,292 per month commensurate with education, experience and licensure.
  • CSU Salary Range: $3,750 - $11,146 per month

Position Summary: This position maintains and repairs a wide range of onboard electrical and electronic equipment, electrical installations and communication systems. Specific areas of responsibility include electrical maintenance, electrical installation, and electronic equipment systems maintenance and repair.

About California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Help plan and perform work for the maintenance and upkeep of the training ship. Assist First and Chief Engineer in maintaining accurate shipboard work order and maintenance records.
  • Assist in administering vessel and equipment familiarization training for marine engineering students and supervising students during coursework under guidance of assigned instructor of record. Assist in planning and organizing a shipboard marine laboratory facility for the training of marine engineering students.
  • Work with and assist Chief Engineer and First Engineer in the preparation of parts orders and repair requirements for the training ship. Work with the Chief Engineer, First Engineer, and engine officers in preparation of MARAD work requests.
  • Electrical, electronic and automation equipment and electrical installations: Maintain and repair vessel’s equipment and installations to support housing, training and operational needs including automation controls. Responsibilities include:
  • Electrical installation and repair to USCG/ABS standard.
  • Work independently and/or supervise student workers in the maintenance and repair of all electric motors, main and emergency switchboards, ventilation, fire detection system, ships general alarm, all vessel lighting systems, all batteries, deck equipment including cranes, winches and windless, and all other electrical related systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, or Facilities Engineering Technology OR equivalent relevant professional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Applicable maritime certification for a Marine Electrician, Marine Engineer, or Electro-Technical Officer (ETO).
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in building, installing, maintenance and repair of shipboard electrical, automation and communication equipment.
  • Ability to observe, analyze and perform troubleshooting on various equipment. Ability to review, plan, and modify installations to meet the operational needs of the vessel. Ability to communicate and cooperate with vessel’s crew and students in handling of these tasks.
  • Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications.
  • Working knowledge of shipboard electronics, network systems, IT installations and satellite communications.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and ability to perform all required equipment inspection, evaluation of performance, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and minor repairs to shipboard electrical equipment.
  • Proficient in the proper use of a wide variety of diagnostic programs, electrical and electronic test equipment and tools. Skilled in diagnosing problems and determining appropriate corrective action.
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Program and safety requirements of the equipment worked on.
  • Ability to observe all safety rules and take appropriate precautions to ensure personal safety and safety of co-workers.
  • Proficient in the performance of shipboard emergency drills.
  • Skilled in interpretation of electrical and electronics technical manuals, drawings, specifications and schematic drawings.
  • Proficient in the proper use of a wide variety of diagnostic programs and electrical and electronics test equipment and tools.
  • Skilled in diagnosing problems determining appropriate corrective action.

  • Knowledge of marine electrical equipment installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of marine and electronics equipment installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of marine and automation equipment installation, maintenance and repair

Special Conditions:

Cruise Requirements:

  • The Marine Electrical Officer will be required to participate in the Academy's annual training cruises as a condition of employment. The candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts that may include working days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays. The successful candidate will be subject to the Academy's random drug testing program, be required to complete a background investigation and pre-employment physical, including a drug test prior to beginning work. As required by Federal regulations, the candidate must be able to obtain a Merchant Mariners Document issued by the US Coast Guard, and a TWIC card issued by the Transportation Safety Administration. In addition, each year the candidate must satisfactorily complete a physical and drug screening for participation in the training cruise.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions:

  • Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits. Activities occasionally involve climbing and working aloft. Ability to function successfully in limited living and working spaces, climb ship ladders and stairs and transit narrow hallways, and to perform assigned duties maintaining balance while occasionally experiencing rolling motion aboard ship.

  • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, fingerprinting, physical and drug testing) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
