DESCRIPTION
The group uses short and long term deployments of moored instruments to understand basic physical properties and dynamics of the ocean, including salinity, temperature, and ocean currents. The projects range from local to international locations, and often involve collaboration with colleagues from other institutions. The majority of projects over the next few years will be part of the newly funded Ocean Observaotry Initiative intended to provide global long-term monitoring of ocean properties.
This position encompasses a large variety of tasks and responsibilities. Two consecutive months at sea, a maximum of four months per year are essential. All at-sea skills are necessary including deck functions; the ability to prepare, deploy and recover scientific instruments. Candidates must be skillful in operating deck equipment including cranes, A-frames, winches, capstans, and small boats. Applicants must be proficient in operating general laboratory equipment including scales, vacuum pumps, and various measuring devices such as gauges. Applicants must be fully capable of using mechanical machinery such as saws, drilling devices, grinders, sanders, etc. Use of electronic devices such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies and analyzers is requisite. Applicants should be capable of maintaining mechanical machinery including winches, spoolers, and cranes. Computer skills are necessary-familiarity with Windows-based software including Microsoft Office is required. Persons applying must possess interactive, cooperative, communicative, and written skills. To summarize, the core emphasis is to support the research, development, production and deployment of oceanographic instrumentation.
Must be able to spend 4 months at sea, 2 months in succession, under adverse conditions. Occasional overtime and irregular hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school and four years of experience in machine shop work, wood-working, tool and die-making, welding and steel fabrication, or mechanics, one year of which must have been in marine construction or repair work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge and experience building oceanographic instruments.
At-sea experience including the preparation, deployment and recovery of oceanographic moorings
Utilize available resources efficiently; including electronic and mechanical test equipment, heavy machinery, machine tools, computers, lifting and transportation equipment
Sea-going skills involving rigging, deck safety, deck layout, stowing and securing gear, crane, A-frame and winch operations, ship handling, "set and drift" navigation and small craft use
Ability to build tools and fixtures used to create better production methods
Demonstrate knowledge and experience working with machine shop equipment including the grinder, cutter, drill machines and power hand tools
Familiarity with computers and software
Possess documentation skills necessary to produce testing information. Tests consist of analyzing corrosion, fatigue, product reliability and production quality control
Coordinate and delegate tasks to students, machinist and temporary personnel
Employ proper interactive skills while assisting scientists, engineers, technicians, students, temporary personnel and machinist
Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, ship deck layouts, schedules, instructions and schematic details
Demonstrate a capacity to work cooperatively with others, in small groups and sometimes for extended periods
Must be able to train and oversee other technical staff.
Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and regulations while working with machinery on land and at sea.
Must be able to work at sea for extended periods and travel abroad.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Passport required for seagoing operations and travel to foreign ports.
California driver's license.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must be able to operate heavy machinery including cranes, winches, fork trucks, large trucks, capstans and A-frames.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $52,284 - $73,226 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.04 - $35.07
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
