SUMMARY
Medical Billing Clerks in the Merit System are responsible for the preparation and submission of healthcare insurance claims for processing. Incumbents in this position are expected to enter the information needed for insurance claims such as patient benefit information, provider information, and diagnosis and treatment codes. Medical Billing Clerks are also responsible for interacting with patients through the facilitation of the check-out process. Employees in this job class collect payments for medical services and are responsible for the balancing of funds. Medical Billing Clerks’ work is reviewed for accuracy.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Prepares and submits medical and dental insurance claims for processing by capturing and reviewing client, provider, and insurance information, coding medical services, and preparing and sending invoices for payment using an electronic medical and dental records system in order to ensure payment is received for the provided healthcare services.
- Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
- Generates and processes invoices and/or payments by preparing billing statements, collecting funds from clients for payments, and maintaining records of payments received in order to collect and document payment for provided services.
- Enters information necessary for insurance claims such as patient, insurance ID, diagnosis and treatment codes and modifiers, and provider information.
- Answers patient questions on patient responsible portions, copays, deductibles, write-offs, etc.
- Performs activities such as refunding money, adjusting bills or reviewing information to assist in resolving customers' complaints.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Prior experience with medical codes and coding (e.g., Current Procedural Terminology, International Classification of Diseases).
- Prior experience with basic accounting skills (e.g., understanding and applying credits/debits, collecting monies, and/or balancing drawers).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.
- Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
